Personal grooming, fitness, priorities and costs....

Other than meticulous daily personal hygiene, dental hygiene and occasional hair cuts, I've never been particularly interested in cosmetics or fashion.

The choices are crazy, ranging from a full menu of cosmetic care, eye-brow threading, WAXING!, manicure, pedicure, personal shoppers, gym memberships, personal trainers, yoga studios, etc, etc

All things said, if you listed your top five priorities of personal grooming, what would they be ? How much must one calculate to spend?

Just wondering...

Ah, I am frustrated, as I thought I might get some well appreciated insight into the psyche of how others approach their personal maintenance...

Re: Personal grooming, fitness, priorities and costs....

My routine is very much like yours Susan.
I do tint my own eyelashes as I am a redhead and my natural lashes are quite fair. I have my hair cut when I visit family three times a year, cover grays myself when needed, use moisturizer, sunscreen, body lotion, a little makeup every day, mainly concealer and eyeliner.

I have never had a massage (horrible thought!), pedicure, manicure, wax, eyebrow threading, gym membership. I run three times a week, do my own nails, shave my legs etc.

I like to look after myself, but I would much rather do it myself, so I suppose I am relatively cheap to maintain!

Priorities are funny. You might find mine sad, but there you go.

I don't do make up. I don't dye my hair. I do go to the gym, though.

I shower on the first Sunday of every month, so I'm smelling very fresh today

My dad used to joke (I think!) that he had a yearly bath, whether he needed it or not.

Re: Personal grooming, fitness, priorities and costs....

I shave, shower and wash my hair once a week, pluck excess hairs from my nose and ears when required. Ear wax is removed by cleaning my in-the-ear ear buds and my DIY hair grooming is courtesy of electric clippers with a No.2.

I have completely embraced the concept of being a modern man.

Actually, I find the most interesting people don't, but lately I am feeling a bit rough on the edges.

Which makes me wonder what are the routines of others...

None of the above for me, although I do yoga at home and my husband is my chiropractor/massage therapist. I rarely wear makeup and feel like I am suffocating when I wear nail polish. My routine is quick and inexpensive. I guess my priorities are:

plenty of sleep
clean teeth
clean/shaved body
clean, soft hair (no hairdryer, flat iron, or curling iron)
moisturizer/sunscreen
hydration

Of these, I probably spend the most on dental care. Two visits per year for cleanings, fresh toothbrush regularly, lots of toothpaste since I brush at least 3x/day, kms of floss, etc.

Sweet man. He certainly never went to a cosmetic studio nor had his nails done. But, he did have his favorite barber and smelt fantastic after his shower...Old Spice.

Okay, he got a bit weathered with time, as a good cowboy should.

Perhaps, it's just my cowgirl side coming out....

But, I still need to pull it together once in a while...mainly when my husband's clients come to town

Re: Personal grooming, fitness, priorities and costs....

Low maintenance here.
Daily shower, cut own hair, face cream from Landi & basic cheap make-up.
Find it cronic how much some people can spend tarting themselves up. The only advantage I can see is providing employment for others.
Had a massage twice & hated it (Thai massage is an excuse for someone to lean on you with their elbows). Never had anything manicured or waxed.

Have noticed a generational difference. Grand parents had a bath once a week but at least washed with a bowl of hat water every day. Mother & her husband are *ecological" as in don't even wash every day & smell like goats that have been left in the rain. Younger people tend to take water for granted.

Re: Personal grooming, fitness, priorities and costs....

I sometimes think I would like to look better groomed, some women look so perfect all the time, and the ones selling cosmetics (in Manor for example) scare the life out of me. Maybe that's why I always look as you say 'a little rough around the edges', I'm afraid to approach these flawless beauties!
Just isn't me somehow.

Re: Personal grooming, fitness, priorities and costs....

i thought i was pretty low maintenance, but when i think about it i do more than i thought...

shave legs, cut my own hair, but i do get it colored on occasion, i do yoga 5 times a week (but i teach it and it's not so much for grooming but for sanity, do my nails/toenails myself (on occasion) and have a nice foot bath/pedi done by me!, i wear a bit of makeup to work but really just a touch of mascara/blush unless i'm going out big, i do get a really nice facial once or twice a year as a treat (usually at the end of the school year and around christmas), but i make most of my own masks/exfoliants/skin products so i do that but it's not all that expensive. i'd much rather be clean and healthy than look glossy and done...and p.s susan- you are a great looking lady- it's been a while but i don't remember so much roughness around your edges

Re: Personal grooming, fitness, priorities and costs....

Low maintenance girl here:

Cut and color my own hair, wax, do eyebrows and everything else needed, do my own nails, etc.

I hate to have other people to do it for me, it takes appointments, waiting, going.... And I am mostly not satisfied so I just learned to do it myself.

Re: Personal grooming, fitness, priorities and costs....

Extremely low maintenance here.

Don't colour my hair, never had p my nails done, had a waxing etc. Had to look up what eyebrow threading actually is. Never had a massage in my life.

I shower daily, shave/wax the bits that need shaving myself, get my hair cut when it needs it ( about every 2 months) and otherwise just wash it and leave it to dry. I hate going to the hairdressers.
I swim a couple of times a week and go to an aquarobics class once a week and I get my teeth cleaned by the hygienist a couple of times a year.

I rarely wear make up, usually only if we're going out somewhere special.

OH seems to be happy with me the way I am. At least I think he is, we'll be celebrating 25 years of marriage on Tuesday so I must be doing something right.

Re: Personal grooming, fitness, priorities and costs....

Maybe a bit regional. Surprised by the painted toenails and shirts and ties in Morges, thought the men were off to a funeral. And at a restaurant in Geneva this week witnessed a woman stroking her boyfriends very large - watch. Scary.
