Advice wanted: should I buy a MTB or Cross bike?

Hi,

After living here a number of years and making do with a used bike I bought for CHF 100 way back when, I would like to invest in a new bike. I have read a lot on the web about the merits of MTB's vs Crosses, but would like to get the local take. Basically, I want to be able to do most terrain, roads and trails, but realistically, I probably won't spend that much time on full-on rooty/stony trails, nor will I do very much of the intense downhill stuff with the shoulder pads and all that gear. Probably, I could just rent on occasions I would want to do that. I really find the uphills annoying here, (yeah, welcome to CH) especially with my current bike, so I want something that will be quite efficient up steep hills.

What would you recommend I buy?

Thanks, JW

I can only relate my very recent experience, where I resolved the exact same conundrum by way of a Rose Pro DX Cross cyclocross bike (http://www.rosebikes.de/produkte/fah.../pro-dx-cross/)

My rationale in choosing the cyclocross bike is simple:
- less complex, technically (lack of suspension); this simplifies maintenance
- less weight - much easier to carry around (into the cellar)
- comparatively lower cost (lack of suspension and what not)
- faster (I picked the 32c Schwalbe Marathon Supreme)
- broader range of well-fitting use cases (city, unpaved roads)

In practice it is turning out that I am indeed much faster than your average MTB rider (the tires and the gearing make the difference, I suppose) while I still enjoy unpaved roads through the woods, up Zürichberg, Uetliberg.

On top, there are few (documented) trails in the Zürich area for "real" mountain-biking. I guess, though, that I will my luck with some single-trails eventually

Current status: No regrets.

Re: Advice wantaed: should I buy a MTB or Cross bike?

Thanks, daffy, for the quick reply. As it happens, I live in the Zurich area, so we are talking about largely the same trails. The one area I have slight hesitation on the cross is the 2nd half of the trail from Langnau to Sihlbrugg along the river, where it does get a bit dicy. My current bike, while not exactly a cross, has wider tires than your typical touring bike and MTB-style straight handle bars, but no suspension. It is pretty rough going with that terrain with my bike, so I wonder if I am not limiting myself by having no suspension. Have you ever tried that area with yours? Also, I read that MTBs have better (lower) gearing for big hills, so wouldn't that be better for your slogs up Uetliberg and so forth?

I have a couple of mountain bikes, but a cross is somewhere on the wish list, if I just had a bit more room in the cellar and a couple of grand spare..

Can't give you a personal comparison, but I have a few friends with them, and they don't regret them. Superbly quick up the Uetli etc.. and (I'm told) once you're used to them it is surprising what you can ride on them.

I have not tried this specific trail (but eventually will) and I do agree with the notion that going uphill can be easier with MTB gearing (just go to http://www.ritzelrechner.de/).

In making my decision, I simply wondered where the bike would be used more often. I do not ride single trail every day, I do not do downhill, and riding up Uetliberg from Uitikon seemed to be surprisingly easy (given my lack of physical shape). I do ride along the Limmat, through Aargau, around the Albis, up some of the hills area. That's what the bike seems to be very suitable for.

Let me admit that I keep eyeing a "real" MTB, having tasted riding a bike again, but, frankly, the eye-watering cost of doing that - no, thanks. I went for the Volkswagen Passat Variant with 6 cylinder bi-turbo diesel engine, not the Land Rover Defender. And I will have one bike only.

Yeah. Give me a couple of more weeks and I will be there, too. <cough>

I watched that video before my purchase, and it influenced my decision towards the cyclocross bike.

Re: Advice wanted: should I buy a MTB or Cross bike?

It sounds like we are on a very wavelength, daffy, in terms of the type of riding we do, level of fitness and budget. For the record, my max budget would be ca. CHF 2K. I just talked to a friend this morning, whose riding habits are quite similar to mine and he too went with a cross. As it happens, I was in Homes Place today and they have a bike on display (Cannondale Quick CX 1 2015 Hybrid Bike) that they are selling in conjunction with Tempo Sport, which looks and sounds promising, judging by the reviews. Maybe the gods are trying to tell me something? Anybody have any thoughts on Cannondale or anything to say in favor of MTBs over crosses?

Re: Advice wanted: should I buy a MTB or Cross bike?

I would get a 29er MTB.hardtail

for 2kchf you can still source too reasonably good bikes one MTB and one road/hybrid - problem solved!

For that budget you'd be best off with a decent 29er MTB (last years model at reduced price).
Maybe even carbon one:
go to www.velomaerkte.ch , use find function on the page for "Kross level B9"
Something along those lines.

Forget the hybrid type (they call it crosstrekking here) it will never be able to compare. These are budged allrounders, with more comfortable geometry and thin tyres for road use.(Perfect for people with budget under a grand though)

And dont mix cyclocross and crosstrekking, these are two diferent things.
