Rapperswil 70.3 triathlon

Toying with the idea of doing a half ironman... don't know why, I know it would be hell. It would probably be the Rapperswil or Staffordshire UK.

Does anyone know if the Rapperswil bike course is closed to traffic? What are those hills like? And what is the stairway to heaven like on the run?

Or if anyone can suggest a pancake flat 70.3 in Europe?

Thanks

Re: Rapperswil 70.3 triathlon

I did the 70.3 in Rapperswil 6 weeks ago, having never done a triathlon until last year. It was very hot, the bike ride is quite hilly and the steps are frankly a nightmare on the run, I had huge cramps on both laps and had to more or less crawl up them on the second lap. On the plus side (!) the swim is great in the lake - you will need a wetsuit - and it is so relatively easy to train if you live here, I cycled the route 4 times in training which is a huge advantage vs another location. If you are reasonably fit and start now training through the winter it is very do-able.

For me Rapperswil was a step to the full Ironman in Zurich last weekend but that is another story......

Re: Rapperswil 70.3 triathlon

The swim is the least of my worries (unless it was warm enough for a non-wetsuit swim... I don't like being parted from my wetsuit), the run would be the issue I think. I've done half marathons before, but not preceded my several hours on a bike

Also training in winter would be difficult as I'm up in the mountains, unless I do it all on rollers and treadmill, it might be better to do one that is at the end of the summer, not the beginning.

If you can get any cross country skiing through the winter it makes a big difference.

Main thing is to eat enough through the event and practice that in the run up to it.....

Re: Rapperswil 70.3 triathlon

My husband did the rapperswil one earlier this year and had a training plan for over the winter. It was difficult to stick to because of the weather and he had to ride on a turbo trainer and run on a treadmill a lot. He is fit generally and does lots of other sports to, along with a ton of cycling in the summer. He didn't find the swim too hard. You have to wear a wetsuit. Despite biking around 500km a week on average he found the bike quite tough and the run a nightmare, especially the steps. It was around 32 degrees this year which sapped everyone's strength. He did it with a friend who does loads of other half iron mans who said this one was really tough. Staffordshire apparently is totally over subscribed because it is flat. He suggests doing them in September and October in other locations so you have spring and summer to train as opposed to winter.

Re: Rapperswil 70.3 triathlon

I'm thinking of doing next year as well as part of my training for Ironman Zurich.

Do you have a tri-bike? I don't yet but it's meant to help save your legs for the run as well as making you faster on the bike leg.

Btw, I did Ironman Austria a few weeks ago and that has a very fast bike course and a flat run course if you ever decide to do a full.

The most important thing I've learnt is not to go to hard on the bike and eat and drink enough while I'm cycling to fuel my run.
