Girls Hockey in Geneva

I have a 14 yo daughter that plays ice hockey on a girls travel team. We may move to Geneva next year from the US. Are there any girls (or womens) leagues or are her Hockey playing days basically over? Thanks for any info.

Re: Girls Hockey in Geneva

to the English forum and (soon) to Switzerland!

There is a Geneva Future Hockey association that includes boys and girls. Their site, Genève Futur Hockey is in French, Google Translate may help. At the bottom of the home page is a contact form; I am sure that if you send them a message in English they will reply.

My apologies if you are fluent in French, but you do not give any language information in your profile.

After posting my reply I remembered to scroll to the bottom of the page, where there are links to a couple of very useful threads dealing with your question. This is a wonderful feature of EF that I occasionally forget (the ravages of age ...)

As far as I know team sport and high school are usually separated--but don't quote me on that. It is possible that they will do a unit on ice-hockey, definitely Uni-hockey.

But for competitive play--you will have to go to an outside organization--there are many, and probably a few to choose from for the female gender.

Women's hockey has been very popular here especially with the women's team earning bronze at the Olympics, and even a few players have played in the top men's league as well as US Big Ten College.

Re: Girls Hockey in Geneva

Hey, a Canadian female here who has played hockey in Suisse Romande.

As Chemmie said, you'll find that school and sport are separate here, so don't worry too much about finding a school with a team. There are a bunch of women's teams in the Geneva area that are part of the Swiss National Hockey League, hopefully you can find one that is close to where you live. Once you know where you'll be living, please do get in touch with me.

At age 14, given that your daughter has had North American training she'd probably be more than ready to play in a women's league. I've played with 15 & 16 year olds here and it was no problem, the team atmosphere was welcoming for young people (i.e. not a lot of booze, everyone very polite and respectful). However, French is without a doubt THE language. Some people might speak some English, but it's not a given. Also, you'll find that just about everyone supports the Montreal Canadiens. For me this is normal, but seeing as you are from the US it might take some getting used to.

Re: Girls Hockey in Geneva

Thanks for the info. Exactly what I was looking for. Although I live in the US I'm from Ottawa, which did not have a team when growing up so Les Habs were it (as opposed to the Leafs.)
