Climbing the North Face of the Eiger was seen throughout the 20th century as one of the greatest mountaineering challenges. Many lost their lives trying both before and after the first successful climb in 1938.
Ascents took days sometimes weeks.
In 2008 a local chap from Interlaken, Ueli Steck, did something extraordinary: he free-climbed the North Face in 2hrs and 45mins.
In 2011 his time was bettered by another climber, Danni Arnold.
This week Ueli has gone one better and climbed it in under 2hrs 23mins.
A genuine Swiss hero, and possibly the greatest climber in the world. www.youtube.com/watch?v=NfpYNr7es0Y
