Guests Coming and Snow is Terrible. Alternatives?

We've got nine people coming next week and the lack of snow is worrisome. I am picturing a whole country of vacationers descending on Verbier and Zermatt at once. Has anybody found anywhere else with decent snow? Are Verbier/Zermatt as crowded as I am picturing them to be?

Also, 4 of the 9 guests are complete beginners and I'm thinking neither Verbier nor Zermatt are going to be great for them. Anybody been to Glacier 3000 yet this year?

Go up to the mountain, let's say one above 2500 m.a.s.l and let your guests stand firmly in front of the snow gun. A little bit of snow here, there and everywhere will not only teach them a valuable ski lesson but it will also show our Helvetian capability of producing snow even under harsh non-cooperative nature's conditions. Viva la Suisse

Re: Guests Coming and Snow is Terrible. Alternatives?

Ok, I went skiing today and did a little research. Pre-la-Joux, in the Portes du Soleil is open at around 70% and the snow quality was much, much better than I had anticipated. So, my intermediates and experts are going to be fine.

However, their beginner slope at the base was TERRIBLE. Basically, it was dirt. So, we went to Super Chatel. The beginner slopes there were in much better shape, but they were all that were open.

So, bottom line, I will take my beginners to Super Chatel and my husband will take the experienced guys to Pre-la-Joux. Hopefully, after 3 days or so, I will be able to get my group up to speed enough to join the others at Pre-la-Joux.

Anybody else go skiing this weekend? Anything to report conditions-wise?

No, but it's great motorcycling weather!

(however, we were lazy and went cruising around in the Boxster, complete with summer tires)

Pré La Joux - interesting, never been there (and I know the Portes du Soleil pretty well) - will have to look it up.

Perhaps take a day less on the pass and go to a great spa for a day? Saillon or Lavey perhaps, or Ovronnaz.

FYI: I was at Glacier 3000 yesterday and the snow was good, much better than anticipated. There are plenty of blue runs open, but the lifts are T-bars. The chair on top is open as well, along with its short red run, but there is little available there for advanced skiers.

Engelberg is pretty beaten up now Top of Jochpass however was good fun - but below it is getting close to critical.
