Re: Loads of snow: take care off piste

My first fall of the season, where I almost crashed into my friend:

He turned left right when I was about to overtake so I panic'd and lost balance. Completly my fault.

At that particular location.....
And same direction, as there are 2 very weak layers in the snow pack you can be sure it's bad pretty much everywhere

Yes, but if you don't see any weak layers in a snowpit that doesn't mean 50 meters away from you, you will find the same thing. A snowpit analysis is a good data point but it doesn't give you any guarantees.

A slope in the same direction, steepness & altitude will have a similar profile 50m apart. A hoar frost is not a random event.

There are always weaker levels in snow, its just how weak.

There is never zero risk, people will always die in the mountains half from natural causes. Some from accidents on piste, falling off cliffs, falling in crevasses, ice falls, rock falls & avalanches. Avalanches are not the only danger just reported more than a fat old man who has a heart attack.

Piste patrol will only open runs & the ski area if they believe it to be 99% safe. They will set off avalanches every day before the runs are opened. Sometimes when it's hot they will close a run for 15 minutes so they can blast the snow above a slope if they think any danger exists.

There is always a tiny risk in the mountains & very occasionally an avalanche does cross a piste. I know a ski instructor who got buried leading a group on a path near Chatel 20 years ago. He was fine.

Avalanche risk is doen to 2 in many places now, it's very warm & not cold at night so I am a little surprised by this.

Reached us in Engelberg during the night. Another 40cm expected during the day. On top of a hardened surface that will make quite a distinct sheer layer, I suspect.

Re: Loads of snow: take care off piste

Damn, I've literally just got off the train from a week in Meribel.

My brother and I were in Courchevel yesterday having popped into the next valley, and decided to have a cruisy day, which we spent eating waffles and skiing blues. That's now looking a lot smarter than I realised at the time. I'd been off piste a fair bit prior to that day.

Definitely happy to be home.

This one is for all you snow geeks. Finally found a good use for American filter coffee, iced coffee of course. It may save your life.
