Re: Gyms in Zurich

I go to David gym 48 in Altstetten. Straight across the road from Letzipark. Good price and all new gear.

Do they offer also strength training course?

Also, any insights with the following gyms:

McFit
AKTIV Fitness
Asia Sport Center, and
Fitnesspark?

Hello! This would be my first time working in Switzerland...can anyone recommend me good and affordable gyms near the University of Zurich?

Any insights deeply appreciated...
If you are affiliated with the Uni, you can join the ASVZ. It will be much, much cheaper than shoveling out several hundred CHF for a gym membership, and you would be granted access to all their facilities and many classes. Depending on what you're into, they should have what you need regarding strength training, although there is only one power rack and one squat rack within all the facilities.

Has anyone tried the new Airport Fitness? I'm curious to see how people like it.

Thanks!

Re: Gyms in Zurich

When you've tried all the gyms and you aren't getting anywhere, come and experience Crossfit and really get a work out.

Crossfit has two locations in Zürich, one near the Letzigrund stadium, the other is out near the airport at Glattbrugg:

I don't know... although I will be working in the University Hospital of Zurich, I have no idea if hospital employees are entitled? Any ideas?

Re: Gyms in Zurich

I've tried a number of gyms in Zurich, and I didn't find any of them to be fantastic. I did find Westside Fitness in Escherwyss Platz to be sufficient, though. They have a decent amount of free weights and the emphasis is more on fitness than wellness, which is a nice change from the usual here. The website is fitness1.ch. If anyone is interested in joining and wants a workout partner, let me know

I'm a researcher at ETH, and I would LOVE to know which ASVZ gym has a power rack or squat rack. So far I've tried the polyterasse at ETHZ and the Irchel gym. They only have Smith machines, no proper squat setup.

I don't understand why anyone would decide to build gyms of these sizes and not include a squat rack. Rooms full of Nautilus and plenty of dumbells and benches, but no racks!

Hönggerberg has one, I believe. I haven't used it personally though.

Re: Gyms in Zurich

Power rack at Hoenggerberg.

"Squat" rack at Fluntern. Quotes because it doesn't have rails, but it's a rack.

Fluntern also has a platform and fat bumpers. Hoenggerberg has bumpers too.

If you are there when I'm there, feel free to ask to work in. I don't wanna be a rack hog, but sometimes I am (actually, everyone's usually pretty cool about letting others work in). Just don't do curlz or I'll kill you.

Re: Gyms in Zurich

Thanks, Motorschweitz. Fluntern seems a bit closer to ETH than Hoenggerberg, so I will check it out. Im glad that someone around here thinks that squats and free barbell lifts are worthwhile

Re: Gyms in Zurich

No problem good to find a fellow barbell enthusiast.

BTW, while I mention that Hoenggerberg has bumpers, they don't really have a platform so you shouldn't drop them if you're doing cleans, jerks, or snatches. Deads and rows are ok, and you need to catch other lifts at the hang and set them down if you wanna do them.

If you wanna drop weights from overhead, I'd recommend Fluntern with the platform and bumpers.

Re: Gyms in Zurich

I used to go to VIF and really liked it. They have a lot of Cybex machines and it's not crowded. They also have sauna in the price of the membership and classes. The owners are really nice.
It's located not too far from the HB, the stop is Museum for Gestaltung. I loved going there but it's a bit far from where I live so now I go to a small local gym but I may go back to VIF again. http://www.vif-fitness.ch/

I tried Active Fitness and it's way too busy for me. I hate people hanging around waiting to use the equipment while I'm using it.

Re: Gyms in Zurich

Sorry, I don't know about gyms in that area.

But now that the thread has been revitalized: I go to Holmes Place, and I like it, especially some of their classes (their version of tae bo is really good). If anyone wants to try them, they have one of those "bring a friend for a trial week (or was it longer?)" campaigns out, so, if you want to try, just send me a PM me with your email and/or telephone number and I can arrange.

Also, as for short term solutions: Migros Fitnesspark (r.g., Stockerhof) offer single entries (CHF 35 - cheaper if you get a ticket with ten), so, if you are very on and off in Switzerland, might be worth looking into.

If you work for a big employer, check their internal offering. E.g., UBS has a fitness center that you can use for free, and in some buildings, they have local fitness rooms.

Re: Gyms in Zurich

And remember to enquire whether you can get discounted health insurance though gym membership. Many insurers offer something which helps to off-set the cost of joining a gym.

Re: Gyms in Zurich

Activ Fitness in Tiefenbrunnen (close to Seefeld) has got a student fee for less than 600 CHF. They also have several courses such as Zumba, Aerodance, if you like dancing, music, having fun but also training. Or even pilates and yoga if you prefer more relaxing courses. I do both of them and I adore them.

Re: Gyms in Zurich

My wife tried Holmes Place, but she said the changing rooms were apalling (very dirty with hair on the floor, dirty towels all over the place, etc.). I would say it's not really worth the money. Though, I heard that some companies offer discounts to the employees, which may make it less overpriced.

We've been using Medlake in Kusnacht. It's excellent, especially if you live close by. It has a small cardio room with bikes and elliptical trainers, and numerous weight machines for pressing, lifting, etc. It has made a huge difference for our fitness when we went skiing this season - I could really tell the difference. And the changing rooms are always clean

Re: Gyms in Zurich

I always go to the cheapest gym which has all the machines I need in working order. Everything else is waste of money and not relevant to staying fit.
