Gyms in Zurich

Hi,
I'm considering joining a gym now that it is too dark for me to run outside and wondered if anyone had a recommendation. Some people I work with use Holmes Place on the top of Jemoli and seem to like it. I like right next to Stadelhofen so anywhere near there would be good. I also like to swim so I guess a gym with a pool would be good. Any ideas anyone? I need to get my ski legs back before I start Sunday skiing! Thanks anyone who can help.

Re: Gyms in Zurich

Hey I know there is a Gym at the end of Bahnhofstrasse above Jemoli, never been in it but I have sen it. Another one I'm more sure about in one in Egg. If you catch the S18 from Stadelhofen down to egg it wont be hard to find, ill post their website below. I've been to that gym and have had a 1 year membership, it's a good quality gym, has sauna, massages, workout area (of course) and all that, but no pool .

http://www.fit-x.ch/index.php?navo=1

If you then click on Standort it gives you a map of the area

Good luck

Great thanks, I will check this one out. I didn't even realise there was a place called 'Egg' - a good name which I won't forget! Thanks again!

Re: Gyms in Zurich

I'm happy to be wrong, but gyms in Zurich don't have pools. I've looked at all the gyms I get a corporate discount for (over 10) and none of them have one. My Swiss friends don't know of any either

there is the city Hallenbad by Selnau station, which isn't too far from Holmes Place or the Activfitness at Stauffacher Tor. Activfitness is about a third of the price of Holmes Place. Granted it's not the best gym I've ever used and it gets a bit busy, but I doubt it is 3x worse than Holmes Place!

Between Zollikon and Zollikerberg there is a large public swimming pool (indoors in winter, in- and outdoors with kiddie-area in summer) that also has a gym. They also have sauna, massages, sunbeds. Don't know how good the gym is, because I only go swimming, but might be worth checking out. A huge number of expats go there - it's a virtual "Tower of Babel" in the changing rooms at the weekend!

Under either Fohrbach "Sommer" or "Winter" on the left-hand side go down to "Fitness"

Opinions about Zurich gyms? Train station gym OK?

Hi everyone:

I would like to join a gym in Zurich and would appreciate some advice.

I'm eligible to join the ETH (university) gym for only 150 CHF, but the hours are very limited and the gym seems crowded. So I'm thinking of joining an outside gym... So far I have checked out three gyms and they seem to cost about 700 CHF per year, on average. I have visited each one briefly, but I'd like to hear what regular users have to say before I get locked into a contract. I would very much appreciate any help with the following questions:

1) Does ~700 CHF per year seem like a reasonable price?

2) The gym at the Hauptbanhof would be very conveniently located, but a couple of women (I'm also female) have told me that the atmosphere is not the best for women and that the staff are not very helpful or friendly. I'd appreciate some input from anyone else who has used this gym. Is it true that the gym is often dirty and that there are a lot of men who harass women and won't let them use equipment? Is it true that it is hard to get time on the treadmills?

3) Are there any other gyms near ETH Zurich that are not that crowded, are reasonably priced, open a lot of hours, and have friendly staff/ good atmosphere? I would want to use the gym in the evenings after about 6:30 pm and I'd want to spend most of my time on the treadmill/elliptical. I'd also want to use a stretching area. I checked out a gym above the Migros store at Stauffacher and it seems extremely crowded. If anyone knows the gym and can confirm/deny that it's crowded, I'd love to hear about it!

Thank you all.

Re: Opinions about Zurich gyms? Train station gym OK?

I'm not sure what you are used to paying, but to me 700 CHF p/a is very reasonable. Circa 60 CHF/£35 pcm seems on a par if not lower than most UK gyms.

I'm actually a member of Migros in Stockerhof and go there most nights. I tend not to go straight from work as it can be fairly busy around 6pm. I usually go around 7:30 and it's starting to empty out, which is great when it's open till 10pm. I personally use the weights area rather than the cardio, but have noticed the cardio machines seem fine from 7 onwards usually.

FYI Migros is 1100 CHF pa from memory.

ETA: I also looked at the gym at Zurich HB (McFit) and found it pretty lousy for freeweights, cardio seemed ok though. I also noticed the staff were not helpful in the slightest which did put me off.

Re: Opinions about Zurich gyms? Train station gym OK?

I don't have any experience with the gym at HB, but I used to be a member at the Migros Fitness Park (I trained at Puls5, Münstergasse and Stockerstrasse) and 6:30PM is pretty much peak time at all those places and my guess is it's the same at any gym you visit at that hour.

If you can stand waiting in line the places I mentioned are pretty nice but it comes at a slightly higher price than 700 chf / year if I remeber correctly.

Re: Opinions about Zurich gyms? Train station gym OK?

Thank you both for the advice! It sounds like the rumors about McFit might have some truth to them then. Another person emailed me about a place called ActiveFitness, and I think I'll try there. It sounds cheaper than Migros.

Thanks again for your time!

Some people at my work use ActivFitness at Central and say it's very good. The only reason I didn't go for it is because I like to go early in the morning as well and it doesn't open to 9am somedays.

Re: Opinions about Zurich gyms? Train station gym OK?

I mostly train outdoors and use Fitness Park occasionally as a base (Stockerhof @ 3koenigstrasse in Zuri centre from where I run up the Pfadiweg towards Forch or Pulse 5, fantastic for along the Limmat).

I buy sets of 10 entries, which cost about 320 francs. Only restriction is that you have to use them within 12 months. Valid at all FitnessPark locations.
This winter, due to the weather I've stayed indoors 2x, using treadmill, rowing machines. Sauna zones are very good for a public health club, in my experience

FB

ps, midday & early evening are busy on the machines, but I think you'll find that that's the case at any decent gym

Re: Opinions about Zurich gyms? Train station gym OK?

I've been using http://www.activfitness.ch/Home.page for the past few months. Since they have several locations, you can pick the one most convenient to you. I think it's a great gym.

I'm a bloke, but at my location in Uster, there are more women that workout than men. Plus they have these Aerobics/Fitness, etc ... courses that go on every day.

I love the fact that they have 2 wide screen TV's showing sports all day long. It definitely motivates me to work out.

I think I paid around 750 sfrs for the whole year.

Well, based on what you guys have said here and the private emails I've received, Activfitness sounds like the place to go. Thanks for your comments everyone!

Re: Opinions about Zurich gyms? Train station gym OK?

Activ Fitness is very reasonable at around 700 a year. Once you are a member, you can visit ANY of the activ gyms in and around Zurich which is really handy if you live near one and work near one the other side of the county! The price also INCLUDES ALL CLASSES. Some have saunas which are also included, sunbeds costing extra. They have a recommend a friend scheme where you get 50chf off your subscription by getting a friend to join, I'd be more than happy to pass one of my forms onto you!!!!! The one in Stauffacher is very busy at peak times, but during the afternoon when I go it's half empty and also quieter in the evenings. Open til 10 Monday to Friday and 6 at weekends

Re: Looking for gym in Zurich

I joined Sihouette in Bellevue over a month ago and am very satisfied. There's no wait time for machines, even during evenings on weekdays. The machines are well maintained, there's enough room for floor exercises, and you're never waiting for a particular set of free weights. They also have a sauna room that I have yet to try out, and more than enough showers, hair dryers, etc. The only downside is that the gym opens laterish in the morning, so I had to say goodbye to my early morning workout plans. Overall, for the price you're paying the services and amenities are pretty good.
