| | | Capello names England squad
So what do you think?
Keepers : Joe Hart ; David James ; Rob Green
Defenders : Baines ; Carragher ; Ashley Cole ; Dawson ; Ferdinand ; Glen Johnson ; Ledley King ; Terry ; Upson ; Stephen Warnock
Midfield : Barry ; Carrick ; Joe Cole ; Gerrard ; Huddlestone ; Adam Johnson ; Lampard ; Lennon ; Milner ; Scott Parker ; Walcott ; Shaun Wright-Philips
Forwards : Bent ; Crouch ; Defoe ; Heskey ; Rooney
-----
My first thoughts :
- Good to see Ledley King going despite his gammy knee (and despite Capello's policy on not taking injured players...)
- Wasn't sure Walcott would get the call up as his only strength seems to be his pace. Would rather Ashley Young personally
- Jamie Carragher?!?! This is a bit risky I think... he gives away a lot of pens through bad/hard/late tackles (or "tattles" as Lee Dixon says).
Would have preferred to see Wes Brown in there as he can play almost anywhere. Is he injured?
- Bent - had a good season, not sure he's ever played with Rooney? Should be interesting.
----
So what do you reckon?
Engerland to win it?!

I have to say I don't think england have the squad to win. Maybe through to the last 4 if they have a good run. Capello seems to have somewhat gone against his word with selecting injured players but he has stuck to it by picking some form players. Despite Kings injury stopping him from training he is a rock in defence and is better than Rio and JT, but their experience will count for more. Good to see the manager is willing to take the risk of selecting young and exciting players tho rather than the previously tried and failed method of selecting reputation.
Also he should give Joe Hart a chance between the posts. He is the onlyone without high profile blunders next to his name

Doesn't exactly get my pulse racing - but I suppose that the pool of players to choose from is not exactly teeming with talent.
Glad to see Barry get the nod and I think that Bent deserves it - he's had a good season. It's all about dynamics on the pitch and finding the right mixture which seems to be a nice blend of safety and talent.

I suspect he will be rotating King and Ferdinand for each match, as they take it turn to be injured.
To be honest though it isn't a very strong team, although I am glad to see the inclusion of Scott Parker in the 30, I hope he goes.

Spurs defender who doesnt train is better than Chelsea and Man U first choice defenders ? King's ok, but I'd put him behind JT or Ferdinand.

England have some great players, but you need a world class keeper to go all the way.

He is one of the few who has changed Capello's mind by actually playing his way into the squad. Terry hasn't been anywhere near his usual form since the press found out about his off the field antics and its no secret that he is really slow. And Rio has been out injured for the majority of the season. King should definately get a start ahead of them

Just heard about Terry.
Brilliant.
So we're basically going to the World Cup with 2 blunderful keepers and 1 with no experience, and 3 injured central defenders and Carragher...

I am disappointed not to see Bobby Zamora in the team. But I understand he turned down the call due to his injury.

Drop David James and replace him with Phil Jagielka.

Is it just me, or did anyone spot something that is alarmingly scarce in the squad? In a midfield full of creative players, there isnt a standout defensive midfielder on the England squad. The only person on there that is a true defensive midfielder is Scott Parker He is a good player but not exactly world class (yet) is he?
I mean, the top club teams in the world have very standout defensive midfielders - Essien and Mikel in Chelsea, Mascher in Pool, Diarra in Real, Cambiasso in Inter Milan....
I'm just saying.

Why does Hargreaves keep getting a mention. The man hasn't played nay top level competitive football for over 18 months and is a bit of an injury liability. He may have performed well four years ago but that was a long time ago.

Jagielka should have got the shout, can play anywhere across the back 4, centre midfield and he is also an excellent goalkeeper...taking 3 keepers to a tournament is overkill, they are never all called upon.
Under Warnock at Sheffield United, if Jagielka was playing, he never used to put a reserve keeper on the bench, as Jagielka could play there almost as well. True story.

King is undoubtedly world class (speaking as a gooner). I seem to remember him coming in for someone during Euro 2004 v France and playing better than anyone really knew he could. Since then he should have been a regular but of course, his knee's are dodgier than mine. He could be our McGrath, but McGrath was an ever present and played through the pain (allegedly self medicating against it...ho hum). King has played nowhere near the same number of games. So Rio and Terry have to be number one choice - barring injury.
I agree that Hart should be given the chance but I think it's too late now. Two games left until the start is it? Looks to me like Green will get the nod, which is a shame because Hart has played really well this season.
Latest news is he's thinking of playing three at the back. So maybe they all get a game!
England simply have to win. The amount of stick Im getting from the Germans and even the Swiss about penalties is driving me mad...!

I'm not sure that you can say that King is world class when he hasn't proved himself either for England or in any form of European competition. Hell, he rarely plays for Spur because of his knee and given that in a World Cup games come thick and fast will he become a liability after just one game...
Hart gets my nod for goal despite his inexperience. What I really can't understand is why Heskey is in the squad. Why have a striker in the team that can't score? | Quote: | | | | | King is undoubtedly world class (speaking as a gooner).
