Look, I don't like swimming in shadowy swimming pools on my own, watched too many Bond films as a kid. Everyone makes great fun of me, but it's how it is. If there's someone else in, I'm fine, as I reckon it means the shark will go for them as I can swim faster than most people...
i only just re-read this post: sharks in a shadowy swimming pool?

interesting... *strokes imaginary cat*

Re: Ok, I have to say it I'm a coward

you are not, the same happens to me. I could go snorkeling a bit on our last trip to the red sea but it took some guts and my husband holding my hand (which totally nullifies my guts comment).
Might it be some sort of agoraphobia? not sure

That's right - look on the bright side and offer encouragement!! Actually, it would be fine as the water would cleanse the wound
Off topic but tetanus needs a shot...The recommendation is to wash your wound to minimize contamination though...

Re: Ok, I have to say it I'm a coward

As a young kid on holiday in Greece I jumped off a pedalo several hundred metres off shore. My parents stared at me in horror as I stood up next to them and smiled. I was standing on a huge manta ray which was swimming in the shadow of the boat. I shot out like an Exocet missile once I looked down to see where I was.

Pedalos still make me twitchy.

You stood on a Manta Ray. Damn! Wicked!

I am so jealous. Of course, I would have the twitches for a while after that as well.

I know its safe, I know it feels great but I'm almost 30 and when I try to swim in a lake or the ocean where I don't see whats on the gorund arghhh. I'm afraid of it.

I have the same problem in the ocean. I have done many times scuba diving, then its not a problem because I can go down and see and I'm not alone, but being on the surface swimming grrr.....

Any advise? Am I stupid?

I have the exact same phobia, seriously. Its ever since I watched Jaws <insert the other various sea/lake monster movies I watched here> and developed as I grew into adulthood... same as my fear of heights. Im a strong swimmer since I was knee-high to a grasshopper, almost fish-like, yet I can't seem to shake it.

At least the Zurisee is safe... there is a shitload of old ammunition on the bottom but don't worry, it's completely safe. Or so I'm told.

Re: Ok, I have to say it I'm a coward

About 9 or 10 years ago, I was out on a boat with dive students when the shop radioed that a whale carcass had been spotted drifting to shore... with tiger sharks tagging along.

We pulled in the divers and students and got over there as quickly as we could. I went down on the stern ladder and spent 15 minutes watching 4 large, magnificent marine carnivores (the longest was ca. 14ft.) taking huge bites of overripe whale meat... leaving holes in the carcass that looked like bites out of a cookie.

When the largest came over to check out our boat, the captain said he'd never seen anyone board the boat as quickly as I had...

Point of the story is, yeah, there are things out there that *could* bite you... but they can usually find something much tastier!

And it took me a week to get the dead-whale-oil-smell out of my favorite wetsuit...

by the way, Peter Benchley (director) seems to have an obsession with sharks, he had another film called "Creature" where he gave the shark legs! absolutely no one is safe, on land or in the water!

Re: Ok, I have to say it I'm a coward

I had the opportunity to dive with a Basking Shark once, near the Eddystone. That was quite spectacular, given the size of it (not my photo below, sadly).

They're vegetarians so they don't bite, but they can give a rather nasty suck

Re: Ok, I have to say it I'm a coward

I came to the assistance of a trawler in the Irish Sea once where a basking shark was entangled in their nets. The crew couldn't get the thing out, yet didn't want to cut their thousands of Pounds worth of lines. I was in a J120 yacht and the beast was as large as our tub. After an hour of dodging a thrashing tail in a RIB, we had to cut the line and the poor thing sank and no doubt died a slow death. The trawlermen weren't too pleased either. It all felt very sad to see the creature disappear covered in thick netting and cable.

I actually think most of the sharks are inoffensive to men.
