Broken crank - Help!

Okay so i was fitting SPD's to my old Shimano crank tonight which proved too much for it, well it seemed, in removing the original pedals they were so seized i removed half the ally thread with them. Consequently, the left hand spd came off on my ride home tonight, thread proper stripped.

Now i have an old Hollowtech XT crank (with new bearings) from my Speccy Epic winging it's way to me from UK. But a few questions. This old bike has an old integral bb, it's a Steven's frame. So few q's has anyone got a spanner i could borrow to remove it, or maybe point me to a shop or pop over to your place use your tools for half hour, im near Seebach. Im guessing i need a pin spanner?

And more importantly will my Hollowtech bearings and crank fit the frame ok?

Hi Al, I think i've got one of the Shimano style internal BB remover tools with me, will need to check tonight for sure tho. It fits the old square taper type BBs:

That look right?
As long as the frame has a standard MTB size BB (68mm shell width) it should fit ok.

I got a few specialty bike tools but I've no clue what you're talking about. Is this what you need ? Bought mine at Velo Ueli in Adliswil but veloplus also has a lot of tools.

Completely out of your way BUT the bike shop in Zollikon is excellent - and relatively cheap.

Each time they have quoted a price for myself or wife they have come in cheaper than they originally said - and usually throw in something for free - last time it was new lights!

Doesn't one side of a bike's pedals have left handed threads..? (clockwise to loosen instead of anti-clockwise)

Yes and i am fully aware, but thanks for mentioning. Basically pedal so seized and part my fault i refused to wait the next day to remove with penetrating oil.

Re: Broken crank - Help!

I've a crank puller, set of hex keys, bb tool and hollowtech tool and a big adjustable to scare things off you're welcome to borrow.

There is no way to know if they are interchangeable unless you know the size of both bb's and the frame bb width. if they're out, you could end up with a mare sorting your chainline. I would start soaking the bb cups now, if they pedal was seized chances are they are too resulting in stripped off teeth or lost of swearing and spanner throwing as you slice your fingers off on the chain ring.

Have fun...

Barrie

Re: Broken crank - Help!

If you can't find anyone else who has one, I might have one down in the basement. It might take months to locate, however, as I think that it's buried down there with the holy grail. If you cannot find someone with it, I shall search in earnest.

And just to make things worse, I had the same issue once upon a time and I should state that Shimano made more than one BB remover tool depending on bike make (road or mountain bike). Of course, this is from the dark ages, so they might have standardized since then.

I also believe I have various cranksets that I kept being given, mostly of the mountain biking variety, all Shimano. If I find them, I shall post them on EF.
