Re: Mountain Bike Meet in Zurich

Don't know what the criteria is for a social events thingy.... but I think that the idea is that it will run every Tuesday evening and he who chooses to attend can do so... It might be nice of those who are going to post here first just so someone isn't sat on their tod waiting for someone who isn't going to come!!!

I know I said this last week!!! But I WILL be back in action next week, will even introduce ye to another trail if people want it... mind you the main trail in Uetliberg is quite a bit of fun...

As a tip for a newbie apart from the bike, is there any other special equipment you recommend? I've been more of a duathlete in the past

It was good last night. Went on a different (more difficult) trail than the previous nights. One of the trails you had been on with the pizza boys with the wooden bridge. It was muddy but not as bad as last week - then again there wasn't a torrential downpour just beforehand.

I like the idea of finishing up in a bar

I was on the main straight down one this evening and it was pretty good. A bit muddy in parts, not perfect but ok.

Re: Mountain Bike Meet in Zurich

Ok, I've logged in before with the intent to ride, but work is not allowing for a 6:45pm ride in the evenings.

As someone who is new to Zurich, can any of you give me some true detail (landmarks even) about where you are riding? I live well out of Zurich so will need to take a train into the main station and then a train to Triemli I guess, but I'm lost from there.

I'd like to do the ride on a Saturday morning, when my schedule is a bit friendlier and more flexible (even if my kids and wife aren't).

Thanks for your help and guidance.

Josh

Re: Mountain Bike Meet in Zurich

If you live well out of Zürich then there is probably some riding in your area, that wouldn't necessitate going into Zürich on your day off. There are some good maps available that can be a good start for a Saturday morning outing. The Zurich one and the Einseideln Rigi one may be useful for you, but if you go into a bike shop and pull one out you will be able to decide if they are any use or not.

I imagine there are some nice rides you can do from Wadenswil (sorry about spelling), towards Hirzel or towards Etzel, the view from the top of Etzel is stunning and well worth the climb to see it.

Maybe some people may be interested in doing a Saturday morning meet up to go for a ride.

In terms of Distance from Zürich and making the Tuesday ride... ... I live just as far out on the other side of the lake, I usually take my bike to work with me when I go riding an leave directly from work. If you can get out of work by 6:15 or even 6:30 you can be at Triemli by 6:45 from almost anywhere in the city.

Maybe Yokine could take his GPS on a ride and post the track of it on google maps to show the route...

To be honest I wouldn't be confident that I wouldn't get you lost trying to describe the route up Uetliberg, but in general once you get onto the gravel roads keep going uphill until you can't anymore.... then you're on top

Re: Mountain Bike Meet in Zurich

Tricky to describe without a map, but here goes.

Get off the train at Triemli (I think you are allowed to carry on to the next stop with the bike if you want to do even less climbing.)

Head in the same direction as the train and turn left at the end of the platform to cross the tracks.

Follow the road that is in front of you, going up the hill and to the right. Keep following that road for a few km until it comes to a T intersection where the right turn crosses the train tracks and the left turn makes a hairpin back in the direction you came from but more uphill. Take the left turn.

Now keep heading roughly in that direction towards Üetliberg. There is no defined route up now. As long as you keep heading generally south and uphill and don't cross any railway lines, you will reach Üetliberg one way or the other.

When you reach the train station, keep going up the road to the very top.

Now the fun begins. Head back down the way you went up for about a hundred meters. When the road hooks sharply to the left, there is a single track going right between some rocks into a park. Follow the track to the far left side of the little park and back into the forest. This will then take you back down to the Triemli station, and is pretty obvious most of the way down. If you are uncertain, then on a Saturday morning somebody is bound to come past sooner or later who knows the way.

Hope this doesn't get you too lost.

Re: Mountain Bike Meet in Zurich

I've started a new thread for another trip in a different discipline of mountainbiking on September 2 - Gravity day. Didn't want to clutter this thread up too much.

Check it out.

It appears the weather gods are not smiling on us!!!

Is anyone thinking of venturing out to "enjoy" the damp conditions tonight. The forecast isn't looking great, but anyone planning on going anyway?

I tweaked a muscle on the weekend so am out of action this week, especially if it is slippery and muddy. But will be back in action again next week. :-D

Re: Mountain Bike Meet in Zurich

I'm out - too much rain and mud for me.

If I wait much longer to get back out onto the trail then I'm going to need to fit my lights!

I'm still up for Tuesday. The track should have had a chance to dry out a bit over the last few days too. Hopefully the weather will hold off tomorrow aswell.

Re: Mountain Bike Meet in Zurich

I wanna join you guys and see if it works for me. I don't have much experience with mountain biking but am keen to try.I have a normal city bike, would I be able to use it for going up the Uetliburg? or would i surely need a mountain bike..and does anyone have a spare one I can use..alternatively I have found a place to rent mountain bikes for but then the rent is for a day atleast..

Re: Mountain Bike Meet in Zurich

You are more than welcome to join us. I don't know what you mean be a "normal city bike". But I would recommend that the minimum standard of bike would be to have knobby tyres, working brakes on both wheels, front suspension (unless you are well hard ), and sturdy enough that it can ride up and down gutters without rattling and shaking too much.
