Laurent Fignon passes

Was sad to read the passing of Tour de France legend Lauren Fignon:

http://www.cyclingnews.com/news/laur...non-remembered

I remember his duels with Greg LeMond, especially the final Sunday in July 1989 when the American actually rode to victory on the cobble stones of Paris.

Aged only 50, Fignon succumbed to cancer. The cycling world and France loses a good man.

Re: Laurent Fignon passes

I`m glad someone picked up on this - it was so sad to hear the news yesterday. The cycling world has lost a big, big star and one of the great legends of the Tour de France.

I remember that duel with Greg Lemond well - it was a classic and the closest finish ever on the Tour.
Greg Lemond turned it all around on the individual time trial on the penultimate day - heartbreak for Laurent Fignon.
He refused to wear the new aerodynamic helmet and some people say that his ponytail, blowing behind him in the wind, lost him vital seconds . . classic stuff.

RIP The professor (as he was known)

yep, it's all over the news in France since yesterday.very sad indeed.. I listened to all his comments last July on the Tour de France. He was working for a famous French radio as well as the TV.. I think this helped him go through the summer ...

Just watching the French news now and a big report on him.

Re: Laurent Fignon passes

thanks for posting. The legendary LeMond-Fignon duel was one of the first sporting events I watched on television. Compared with the Tour de France athletes today, seems like another era...
