Bored? Schwyz Hike this Saturday, 20-11-2010?

Hello,

My smarter half is writing her thesis and is kicking me out for the weekend. I am looking at doing a hike begining somewhere in Kanton Schwytz, early Saturday morning. Maybe begining in Siebnen and take the Panoramaweg 3 to Einsiedeln, or a more challenging Innerthal over the ridge to Völeramsee (something like that). There are a coupld other challenging hikes but I need to check lattitude a weather.
I will do some more research and list some preferences over the next couple of days - weather may play a part as higher up may be seriously challenging - I do prefer this but within reason ofcoarse.

I am looking for a couple of people to join. This would be a semi-serious hike. Some mountain gear etc. - not a simple stroll in the country. Supplies for the day. Probably take at least 5-7 hours - I doubt there will ba any bars to stop in (but would be nice to go for a mid-mountain hot wine.

Cheers

Looking forward to replies.

Good idea, although I do not subscribe to the idea of hiking because you are bored

Maybe you can state more objectively the difficulty and elevation gain you are aiming at, using maybe the SAC grades

Too early to commit myself, let's see the weather forecasts closer to the day.

Re: Bored? Schwyz Hike this Saturday, 20-11-2010?

I agree. The "bored" was included to incite thought about one's activities this upcoming weekend. How about a risky, possibly wet and cold, hike instead? Challenge accepted.
As for ratings I am not familiar with any systems. I am not trained as you seem in your posts. I just go into the mountains, bring some food and drink, and enjoy the nature and peace. If someone was to try and challenge timing and height, it would spur interest. At the same time I enjoy sitting on a log and downing a cold beer - reflecting on how lucky I am to enjoy something so few people do.
The hike I was thinking about starts around 600M and up to about 1800-1900M I think. I did it in the summer with full camping gear attached to my back (the heavier half) in two rainy days. The rock gets sharp near the top so depending on snowfall etc. there is a small chance of turning back if conditions were very poor. Logistics - Train to Seibnen, bus to Vorderthal, hike around the lake, over the ridge, down into the valley and catch a bus back to the train line in Glarus. Ofcoarse, I am open to suggestions and friendly non-egotistical challenges.
Looking forward to the weekend

Sounds good. Maybe Assassin will smell it and be here before long

I think it is more important for inexperienced/untrained hikers to know the grading system and the theory behind it for their own safety, but i can respect not everyone agrees with me; we can leave it at that.

Sure we can try something challenging and we can always turn back if it seems stupidly risky or not enjoyable. Schwyz/Glarus works for me, so count me as a "strong maybe".

Re: Bored? Schwyz Hike this Saturday, 20-11-2010?

Just so you guys know - this is what 1300m is looking like at the moment

http://amden.cam.stpartner.ch/cam2/last_m.jpg

I can see no reason why the snow won't be down to 500m - as there was snow in Zumikon last night.

The forecast is that it will stay very cold for the next few days - but warm up on Saturday. I know it isn't exactly the area you are going to - but it is close - and south facing!

Re: Bored? Schwyz Hike this Saturday, 20-11-2010?

Weather should not be a major factor unless there is serious rain. If the weather is too cold and wet than perhaps a lower altitude hike would suffice.
Basically I am looking for interested parties in spending the day outside. If it gets uncomfortable we stop in a pub and warm up. Is everyone here turning so Swiss that outdoors activities are only for superior weather days?
Seibnen (S2) Bahnhof looksl ike a good meeting place - there are higher and lower altitude hikes a short bus ride away.
Anyone else interested?

Sorry that is not what I meant when I said I am weather dependent; I can only hike in poor weather; superior weather days are for other mountain sports

It seems weather will be okay after all, so I am backing out of this; hope you find someone.

Cheers,

Re: Bored? Schwyz Hike this Saturday, 20-11-2010?

Hello,

So there may be a couple of us so far. I would suggest we meet in Innerthal. I will be taking the S2 to Seibnen and then the bus to Innerthal - its the last stop at a large parking lot (if anyone prefers driving). Fee free to join me in Seibnen. We can then decide from there if we take one of three hikes I have found:
1) A country strole through Vorderthal, and around some hills and back to Innerthal - 5hrs - 8km (seems that includes a couple of drink breaks.
2) If weather is really bad we can do the 10 some odd kilometers around the lake.
3) If the weather is good and we want to have a challenging hike - we hike to the end of the lake, up the ridge (1900M) and over to the next lake. Bus to Glarus and train home.
I will post times tonight and do some weather checks etc. But I would like to leave from Innerthal around 8:30 - if we do version three then maybe 8:00.

I am probably free on Sunday...was looking for something not too adventurous and not too far from Zurich. Maximum T4, 1500m elevation gain, 2 hours from Zurich. Let me know if you have some ideas and in the meantime I will sound the idea in my circle too. For example
One thing to be decided for both Sat and Sunday hikers is whether to go as a snowshoe hike higher up, or a slushy muddy hike on lower ground

I could go for Sunday as well. I am free both days so if we can get a small group together for Sunday then I would be happy to join. I could probably get a colleague or two from work as well since Sunday seems to work better for everyone.
Please keep me informed and I will be there.

Great! To be honest, I only thought about it over the last couple of days and had not had chance to consider a venue, so I`m open to anything.
That`s a bit of a cop-out, sorry but I get the impression that you`ve got far more local knowledge than I have and so would bow to your experience regarding a route. If Pops comes as well . . even better!.
I did Pilatus a couple of weeks ago, and regretted not taking snow shoes, as the few people that I saw, were passing me as I was floundering in the snow on the upper slopes. Or . . was it because I was just slow?

I can't say I have far more local knowledge, but yes I have picked up quite a lot these last few months

Tomorrow I will be climbing in Glarus near Amden or St Gallen, I will get a first hand view, plus the opinion of experts I will be with, and based on that I will suggest a plan tomorrow evening. Expect it be T2-T3 and under 1000m ht diff, and not very early start because I am looking for a relaxing Sunday . In the meantime if someone can put some thought and post a plan I am happy to go with it, in fact I'd prefer that (treat me as confirmed).

It is not feasible for me to rent snowshoes for Sunday, so it has to be something lower that doesn't need them. (Or in some places it is possible to rent at the cablecar station and return it at the end of the day, that's OK for me).

OP: sorry for the hijack, but if you can manage to work it out with your smarter half and join us on Sunday instead, it will be great

Re: Bored? Schwyz Hike this Saturday, 20-11-2010?

Weather update: We were up at 900m this morning - and there is no snow. However the dusting comes down to around 1300 on a south facing slope. I'd expect a good melt over the next 24 hours.

Weather for Sunday is looking, well, wet, day temperatures of 4c (Amden) with snow expected.

Re: Bored? Schwyz Hike this Saturday, 20-11-2010?

Niranja: I would prefer you suggest something for Sunday and I would enjoy coming along. Looking forward to it.
Anyone else for Satruday(tomorrow): I will be in Innerthal at the Post Bus stop (end stop) on the 8:55 bus. I am not sure now if anyone will join but if you are interested, pm me and I can send you my number or meet me there - I am the tall guy with a brown coat. I like taking the bus because I never know where I end up, but if you drive its fine, just not as flexible.
Probably take an easy hike tomorrow, maybe go off on one of the hikes that start around the lake. Will have plenty of time to go, relax, and enjoy the weather.
bis morgen

Re: Bored? Schwyz Hike this Saturday, 20-11-2010?

Sorry I didn't notice you had already provided some options. May I add two more options close by:

1. Chli Aubrig is pretty well-known; I haven't been there and am interested in trying it, it ends at Innerthal.

2. If you want something starting from Schwyz bahnhof, Grosser Mythen is an obvious choice; it is going to be sufficiently adventurous for most of us at this time of the year, I would be prepared to turn back if it gets too tough up there.

Whatever appeals to most people. A meeting time of around 8:30 is what you can prepare for; we can decide the spot tomorrow evening.

Niranjan,

I was planning Saturday - so I do the plan tomorrow. So far at least me and a friend - looks like he wanted to drive so we will be at the parking lot around 9:00
As for Sunday, I will be where ever you decide tomorrow. Looking forward to something new.

Re: Bored? Schwyz Hike this Saturday, 20-11-2010?

Okay, then tomorrow (Sunday) we do the Chli Aubrig.
I will travel down on the train from Zurich and I can arrive at Euthal Post at either 08:20 or 08:50 - probably take the earlier train.
I will wait at the Euthal Post until either we are all there or else 09:00.
Please send me a PM if you are thinking of coming.
I have a red rucksack - look out for me.
I chose this realitvely shorter route because I have to be back in Zurich at around 18:00 (that should give us plenty of time . . maybe to have a beer too).
Looking forward to seeing anyone there.
Anyone is welcome.
