[Geneva]Rowing for an anglophone?

I'm not a serious competitor, but I like to row for the exercise and to have fun with other people. I wouldn't mind continuing in Geneva if there's a club nearby. Anyone know whether sculling or crew is available? Any experience taking rowing commands in a language other than English? Thanks.

Ben

Brilliant, thanks very much.

My language skills are passable right now, but I guess my rowing vocabulary in French will increase real soon!

Re: [Geneva]Rowing for an anglophone? - what about Zurich?

Has anyone got any experience of the Zurich rowing clubs? Are the any English speakers who have rowed here - if so where is the best place to go if you have some experience and just want to row "for fun"(!).

Hi,

I'm very new to Geneva/ Switzerland. I saw so many people rowing on the lake and i think its fascinating to learn this sport.

Does anyone know where i can learn/ take part in rowing near Geneva/ Nyon region?

Thanks

Re: [Geneva]Rowing for an anglophone?

Angie,

Welcome to Switzerland! I think you have two choices in Geneva:

Société Nautique de Genève
http://www.nautique.org/page.php?page_id=46

Club d'Aviron Vésenaz
http://www.avironvesenaz.ch/loisir.html

The University of Geneva has a rowing club too, but you need to be a student to enroll.

There is also a club in Nyon. The site says they offer courses to beginners every Spring:
http://www.avironnyon.com/contacts.html

Rowing's a great sport so I hope you find a class to take.

Best,
Ben

goombie has made some interesting contributions
Re: [Geneva]Rowing for an anglophone?

Morges has the Forward Rowing Club, they take competing and loisirs members, plus a good competitive club in Lausanne.

Thanks Goombie

Morges would be perfect but they don't really have any other female memebers for me to row/train with.

Are you a member?

Re: [Geneva]Rowing for an anglophone?

Hi,

In Geneva you have Société Nautique de Genève (just up from the Jet d'eau)
http://www.nautique.org/page.php?page_id=46

I believe that they have a few members that speak English, best to send them an email or pop along. When the weather is bad they train down the river but I'm not sure where that particular boat house is.

Let us know how you get on. It's a fantastic sport.

If you are not so keen on rowing on the Geneva lake and need somewhere where the waters are more settled but not far away Divonne has a lovely rowing club in France, very close to Nyon highly recommended.

Re: [Geneva]Rowing for an anglophone?

Anyone interested in rowing in Geneva please get in touch with me either via PM or reply to this thread - I row at the Societe Nautique de Geneve and can put you in touch with the right person or give you some more info.

As mentioned earlier in the thread, the leisure/beginner rowing is mostly on the lake, but the competition squads train out of a separate boathouse just downstream from the lake at Lignon. You can see the landing stage on GoogleMaps here which is about 15 mins by car or bike from Cornavin station.

For the experienced rowers, we have both men's and women's squads which do well nationally (both squads won a number of silver medals at the Swiss Championships in July 2009) and we also race each year in London (HoRR and WeHoRR) and Aiguebelette.

There are summer schools for beginners starting soon, and for beginner juniors there are also year-round classes.

Cheers,
GenevaSculler

Re: [Geneva]Rowing for an anglophone?

Thanks for the info that is really good news in Geneva. I am a rower more than a sculler so it was interesting to see the place you pointed out at the river. I wonder how I can get back into it. I rowed for England and won the Head of the river race and also used to train in Aiguebellete.... what a small world. I would love to pick it up again but my fitness levels oohhh laaa not as good as I used to be. Thanks!!
