Bike Rack options

Hi folks, moving to zug with my wife. I use a small hitch mount bike rack for my bikes in the states. Should I bring it, and add a hitch to my leased car in Zug, or should I buy a trunk mount unit? What do you see around town? Any issues with hitch mount units blocking rear license plates?
Thanks

I believe in Switzerland you need a rack that mounts high enough on the trunk to keep the taillights and license plate exposed. I'm not 100% on this but it is all I've seen on cars and for sale. Good luck in Zug! Seems lovely the couple times I've been.

There was this for sale on here. As you can see it has space for a license plate and has additional lights. Most places in Europe require the license plate to be visible so many hitch mount bike racks allow that.

Re: Bike Rack options

Thats a very serious bike rack, and ridiculously expensive. I guess I will have to get a simple truck mount strap on rack for my 2-3 years in switzerland. Thanks for the info.

Re: Bike Rack options

As it might help with your decision, the USA trailer hitch system is NOT the same as the CH/European one. I will not go into all of the differences but your bike rack will not work with a CH trailer hitch. Sell or leave your USA bike rack in the USA.

Just go with a strap mounted system (there are several models available) that will work. You just need to make sure that the rear plate is visible so when the speed camera flashes, it can see the plate . This is just a question of setting it up correctly.

Oh yes... I surely want to make sure the speed camera can see my plate.

Re: Bike Rack options

Do you know if the models of bike racks are the "trunk mount" models? They strap to the car, but the plate would be blocked by the bike itself.... not the rack.

No. The bike(s) are higher than the level of the plate. Here is one example.
