Healthy eating tips for vegetarian living with meat eater please!

Hi all,

Am looking to shed a few pounds after the Christmas break.

Problem is, I do most of the cooking but I live with a proper carnivore who can't live without meat at least once a day!

We're both trying to lose a bit of weight and it's the first time she's ever tried to (never needed to before) so it's a total maze to her.

Anyone ever been in this situation or have any meal tips?

Cheers (with a glass of mineral water of course.... )

I always get confused on this one, but do vegetarians eat fish?

I know some that do and some that don't! The confusion.....

If you both do eat fish this maybe a way out. Healthy low in fat etc etc

Re: Healthy eating tips for vegetarian living with meat eater please!

One of the easiest ways is too eat bran for breakfast, so I mean the full fibre bran like Kellogs Day Vita sticks. You can add yoghurt or milk and in one month I guarantee you will have lost kilos.

It will add fibre (soluble and insoluble), B vitamins to your diet. The reason you will loose weight is that this breakfast is so filling and full of slowly digested carbs that you will eat less at night.

Increase excercise however in combination with diet changes is always the most effective though . Anyway, for an average sized woman, I'd say you can loose 3-4 kilos a year by eating this kind of breakfast.

You need a personal trainer like this guy (don't know if he's in Vevey):

Trainer Max wird böse. Sehr böse.

Re: Healthy eating tips for vegetarian living with meat eater please!

you could try the low carb thing. cheese & low carb veggie dishes for you, steak & low carb veggies for your roommate....
Eliminate sugar, white bread, white pasta, potatoes... etc.

(please, don't eat fish, the seas are running out! ... hum, between this thread & the Leopard skin coat one, there is very little left to eat.... )

No vegetarians don't eat fish Vegetarian eat vegetables and fruits type of stuff hence the term vegetarian
You will find some wannabe vegetarians who for some strange reason call themselves vegetarian but continue to eat meat, fish etc etc It makes them feel better about themselves or something

Anyway cut out dairy products and your weight will drop. Cut out refined products and you will see further weight/fat reduction. Do hard cardio one hour a day for 3 months to see faster results.

Just remember that fat was not put on in one day so fat won't be burnt off in one day either. 6 months to 1 year of constant training will get most people fit. People give up after a month and then moan.

If you want to go really hardcore then use these links for visual inspiration and motivation (yummy)-

http://www.veganbodybuilding.com/rob/?page=bios

Plenty of advice here (not vegetarian but still helpful tips)-

Re: Healthy eating tips for vegetarian living with meat eater please!

Thanks everyone

I'll get her to do her own steak :P

I haven't eaten meat since 1992.
I didn't eat fish either until about 2002/2003 but found it so hard in Switzerland as there are not many veggie options. I do eat fish now. Not loads, maybe once or twice a week (have discovered sushi....). When I go back to the UK I don't eat fish either though. Don't need to over there, there are plenty of alternatives.
Here when you go for lunch, it's either a cheese sandwich, spaghetti with a tomato sauce or chips.... not particularly healthy either.

In '98 I was working in London 5 minutes walk away from a vegan, organic take away place. It was wonderful!
I've put 20 kilos on since those days!

Going back to cheese, what types would you recommend? Some are ridiculously high in fat (gruyère for example)

I don't know how the Swiss manage to eat fondue and still look good!

Well, you just lost one of your supporters there. As rhythmical remedy stated previously, you are not a vegetarian, well at least in his eyes. You are now just as bad as the rest of us.

My suggestion and I just lost about 5 kg without much additional exercise, eat less. Have your main meal at lunch and have something light for dinner that focuses on protein and vegetables. Oh, and also walk everywhere you can. Got 10 minutes till the next tram? Walk two stops instead of waiting.

Good luck.

Re: Healthy eating tips for vegetarian living with meat eater please!

Yes, sorry, the title of the thread is a little misleading...

I keep trying to explain to the French Swiss that I'm not vegetarian but I don't eat meat and they just don't get it, so everyone refers to me as "la" vegetarian.

I'm having more of a problem with getting her to eat healthily but include a bit of meat. I've never done this with carnivores before!

Thanks for your messages, it's interesting

chemgoddess I could not let that dig go unchallenged specially as you hurt my feelings by not adding a smiley Chem you seem to have issues dealing and understanding the whole concept of vegetarianism If you eat fish (raw in OP's case) then you are not vegetarian.

* Vegetarianism is the practice of a diet that excludes ALL animal flesh, including poultry, game, fish, shellfish or crustacea....

Another one for you-

* A true vegetarian eats no meat at all, including chicken and fish.

---------------------------------------------------

Sub groups-

* lacto-ovo vegetarian eats dairy products and eggs, but excludes meat, fish, and poultry.

* lacto vegetarian eats dairy products but not eggs

* ovo vegetarian eats eggs but not dairy products.
-----------------------------------------------------

Chem I want you to print the above info and stick it above your monitor

But thanks for the definitions cause, you know, I'd never heard any of it before. Cause, you know, I didn't used to be a vegetarian.

Anyhoo, I wish the OP good luck on her quest to lose weight. It's never an easy challenge.

If you did not care then

a) you would not have made that dig at me
b) shadow me in all animal related threads
c) mention in all those animal threads that you used to be vegetarian (no medal icon or I would have handed you one)

Chem I don't hate or look down on meat eaters the way you think. I just feel sad that they are so pre historic

Re: Healthy eating tips for vegetarian living with meat eater please!

Jenny, back to your initial quest:

I'd suggest packing your own lunch -- coz at least you know what goes in there. A lot of food sold over lunch counters may contain hidden fats.

Some yummy veggie suggestions:
1. Raw fennel sliced thinly, lightly sprinkled with salt & pepper, and a few drops of extravirgin olive oil.

2. Kohlrabi, julienned and treated as above.

3. Try Kuerbiskernoel (pumpkinseed oil) for taste in salads, if you haven't already. (But you can't cook with it.) A few drops go a long way.

4. ChemG is right; walk as much as you can -- briskly.

5. If you do eat fish, wrap it up in foil with slices of your fav veggies and a few strips of ginger, and cook it in the oven for 20-30 minutes (depending on the thickness of the fish).

6. Do not avoid potatoes completely; eat plain (without fatty topping) boiled, steamed or roasted. Just one potato fills you up and gives you needed nutrients.

7. Alternate potato with boiled/steamed wild rice and a couple of slices of wholemeal bread for that fine fed-with-comfort-food feeling.

8. Eat fresh fruit when you feel like a nibble. If desperate, have a small portion of dark chocolate, but not too often.

Good luck!

Should the word 'healthy' be used in the same sentance with 'vegetarian'???

All jokes aside, nothing beats a bit of exersize, then one can eat as they please!!

No, I'm sorry I have to disagree with you. Particularly as people get older and their metabolism slows down even with exercise you can't just eat whatever you want and mantain the same figure. This is often especially true for women.
