Bike NOT to buy, etc.

Although I worked in a bike shop back in the States, many of the brands here are unfamilier to me save a few like Trek, Giant and Specialized. Anyone have andy negative feedback on a certain brand? Who should I avoid?

Onto my Etc. Is it wiser to buy in another country, and just pay the tax here? AND, could anyone recomend a good road bike store, new or used, around the areas of Lausanne, Geneva, or Freibourg? I need to get into a store and have some looks.
Lastly, any good internet sites in English? Most of the ones I found on here via searches are in Deutsch.

Thanks so much!

Re: Bike NOT to buy, etc.

I don't have any negative feedback on bike brands, sorry. The only thing that I might say is that I think that BMC bikes are a bit too pricey. They are originally a Swiss company, and so they're quite popular here (although a guy in a local bike store told me that they're no longer made in Switzerland). They do make some beautiful bikes, and the design, engineering, and technology is top quality, but this means that you pay a bit more than you would for a comparatively-equipped bike from another manufacturer. You are unlikely to notice the difference that this extra money brings you unless you are really serious or really picky.

There is very little in the way of online bike sales within Switzerland, so you'll generally have to buy locally of buy from an online store in the EU - in which case you should obviously look at the UK for English-language sites.

I do know a bit about most of the bike stores around Lausanne. If you'd like to speak to someone in English, then there are two stores that I know of to try: The Bike in Pulley, whose owner is originally American, they have a lot of Specialized and Cannondales; and Hood Cycles, whose owner is originally English, they build their own brand of bikes - they don't build frames, but they'll make a bike from one of their stock frames with any component combination and frame colour that you want. Another good shop for road bikes is BBR cycles, located a few kms north of Lausanne. They are the biggest Trek dealer in town, and they have a few other brands of road bikes, too, but I've never found anyone in there who speaks English, but that means it's a good chance to practice my French (I own two Trek bikes, one touring and one racing bike, and I love them both).

I don't know which brands not to buy. I have a Felt (which I believe is German/American company) racing bike and very happy with it.

Re: Bike NOT to buy, etc.

Hi,

Taking the opportunity of this old and useful post from Lauren, I am planning to buy a Giant seek 4 in France (459 Euros). I am still open to other suggestions in the same price range/type of bicycle, or even experiences that you could share about similar bikes. I could go up to 1000 CHF for a good branded commuting bike. Any advise? I am planning to use it to commute from time to time between Lausanne and Morges, and for the usual spring/summer/autumn weekend rides.
The bike can bee seen at:

It is about 12Kg, something I was a bit concerned as it seems to be close to the high range in this sense. Any comments?

I can't suggest anything to avoid I am afraid but I cannot speak highly enough about CUBE bikes. They are a German make but you can buy them all across Europe. I love my CUBE bike! Also I have heard good things about Canyon, another German brand
