Well, I've secured a job in the UK (subject to some paperwork) and so I'm not living around Zuerich any longer. However, I am thinking of coming back for some skiing. Judging by some reports on the UK news and a couple of threads here, the snows are pretty late in coming to the alpine states this year....

What's the general snow situation like at the moment? I was thinking of coming back for a New Year's ski break with some friends but if the snow situation is grim, I don't see the point.

I know it's still extremely early and technically pre-season but in most previous years I was on the slopes at the start of December, even if not all were fully open. I even remember skiing the Jakobshorn in Davos in mid-Nov a few years back.

How about Austria or France - any better conditions there?

I can't give you a comparsion to last year as I have only been hear a week, but I can give you a current weather report and tell you what others have told me.

Here in zurich its quite cold but not enough for snow but I'm not sure how that would translate to the mountains. Its been very quite warm this week but getting colder toward the weekend.

I'm pretty sure you could get some skiing for the New Years out of the UK. Try Val Thoren which is very high. I went there for a ski weekend at the end of November a few years ago and the conditions were excellent.

Flims Laax is open on the glacier but according to Radio Züichsee there will not be much skiing in this area before Christmas. At Ibergregg the kinder lift is open but its pretty heavy leg breaking stuff at the moment. We need a couple of days of very cold weather to freeze it all down. Last year we had snow early Dec but a warm week before Christmas so it did not settle down till Jan.
Today its snowing down to about 700 meteres
