Obermurgsee, Walensee - good walk/hike

If anybody is interested in a nice Hike.
Yesterday I went up to Obermurgsee and even though a bit hard in places I did see families with quite small children walking up.
Parking is in the Murgtal (Junction 47 A3) above the Walensee its on the Zürich side of Flumserberg, you have to pay Sfr 8 for a days parking on the way up at a ticket machine on the left. I parked in P2, which is around 1200m there is P3 about 1Km further up, but the road didn’t suit my car.
It’s pathed all the way with a few small streams running across but not deep, a cobbled area was a bit slippery on the way down after Fridays rain. The path varies from grassland to wooded sections with Marmosets (Edit Marmots) and waterfalls. After the path winds it way up you finally get to an area, which is protected so no picnicking, no fires and no nicking plants. The path then follows the side of a steep valley with the first lake and a waterfall at the end. At the Waterfall you reach Obermurgsee 2 lakes 1800m, 1 small and 1 a bit larger with people fishing. The restaurant is a little expensive but as explained in the Menu they have to ship everything in by Helicopter. You can also book a bed at the restaurant but I’m not sure costs.

This walk took 2 hours going up this 600m-height difference and I would recommend proper walking shoes because a twisted ankle is possible and coming down I don’t think you Sunday shoes would give much grip. Coming down was 1.5 hours using the same route as up.

Have fun DC

Re: Obermurgsee Had a good walk yesterday

I love that hike! It is one of my favourites in CH. The view when you come around the bend and see the whole panaorama at once is spectacular.

Been to Murgsee about six weeks ago. Doing the straight up/back down is pretty hard, no flat parts to catch your breath. Far more scenic and less killer on the puppies (hiker slang for the footsies) is the Rundwanderung via Mürtschenalp (1 steep climb at the start, then flat, up, flat, up across the Murgseefurggel, down to Murgsee and then it's all downhill back to the car).
Park at P1, walk back the 50 or so meters to get up to that cascade. Map here. Click bottom link (Wandergebietsansicht)!

Hmmmm, marmosets in the Alps... Are you sure?

As far as I know I'm the only marmoset up there. And even though we feep to communicate and have quite sharp teeth really, I don't think I'd like to be mistaken with an old world rodent who spends half a year inside a burrow nibbling dried weeds and whistles... I mean, really!

Them's called marmots!

Well, we had a SchniPo (Schnitzel fries/chips) for 23.50 and a Bratwurst Spuds (21.50), so let's say the prices are like in Zurich.

Especially if the path is wet, very slippery! Had to resort to trekking poles as even with hiking boots kept slipping on the cobble-like parts.

Very worthwhile hike!

Yeah I love this hike too. At first you hike up through Swiss stone pine woods (Arvenwald) and then there are plenty of small interesting waterfalls all over the place. The view is very nice too. Compared to some hikes in the Saentis region, I did not find this hike particularly steep or tiring. The restaurant has very slow service, but the hike is very nice.

Sorry I should have mentioned something in this thread.

I did this hike a few years ago in early July and the Snow was quite deep and the restaurant was not fully open so be carefully what time of year you go.

Hi DC,

No offense taken, just jumped at the opportunity to poke some fun!

As for the time of year to go up there, I first went end of April this year. Where the ticket machine is, the barrier was down, padlocked. OK, leave car, hike up. Above where you walk through the farm (alt. 1320m), the snow cover was still about 3 feet, and after postholing up to the weekend cabin we decided to turn back. The sign by the barrier said the open season would start the 10th of May, so we decided to wait at least 6 weeks for the snow to vanish. Well worth it!

It's one of those gorgeous hikes that only locals know about and is definitely off the tourist horde horizon.
