Hey folks,

If anyone would be interested in playing some GAA, or knows of some football going on in Lausanne, then let me know. I've just moved here and I'd love to find people to play with, even if it's just to have a kick around downb y the lake in the summer.

Would you care to enlighten us ignorant folks about what GAA is? I could Google it, but I feel that its your responsibility since you made the thread, and included it in the thread title without any explanation.

I did google and was none the wiser:
GAA = Gaelic athletic association
GAA = goal against average
GAA = there is a GAA gene
etc

I presume you're talking about Irish games: GAA Gaelic Athletic Association but that isn't a game so you're not making any sense. The correct term is Gaelic football. The other Gaelic game is hurling.

Think you should all chill out a bit - wasn't exactly a crime.

Anyway, it's not hard to assume beyond reasonable doubt that Sharkey was talking about a sport as he later mentions that other one; Football.
So unless you're just being hilarious and facetious or you for some reason think he's talking about the GAA gene (well pointed out Swisstree!), which of course everybody talks about followed by the subject of football, it's not too hard to work out that he's talking about Gaelic Football.

Thought this site was founded on the intention of helping foreigners in Switzerland feel welcomed in, helping them out with any queries, so good job. Nice to see the 'veterans' showing their experience!

Besides that, I'm trying to find more chances to play football at the moment - no one seems to at this time of year, but if you hear of anything would love to know.

I'm not sure there are any GAA clubs in Lausanne, but then again there are more and more people arriving from the emerald isle... there might be something in Zurich (too far but...) or maybe you could get some interest going. Certainly would be sociable- just explaining what it is and how to play could last a few pints

I play for the hurling team in Zurich, it's a bit of a trek from Lausanne but AFAIK there's no other clubs around in Switzerland. We're starting a Gaa team next year.

There's 5-6 tournaments a year in the "European" region, we play against teams from Brussels, The Hague, Luxembourg, Munich etc and every place hosts a tournament for both Hurling and Gaa.

(For the record, I'm not Irish but I know people who are and they got me into the sport)

If you fancied trekking through to meet the lads (and lasses, Camogie as well) then training starts in Feb - we have at least one guy playing from Basel so we appreciate that you wouldn't be able to make most training sessions, but at maybe you could head over and see what you think?

Otherwise all the best with finding a team nearer to Lausanne, hope it works out

If you don't know what it is then you can't answer the OP's question anyway, so I guess it doesn't matter either way.

Referring to either gaelic football or hurling as GAA makes sense to anyone familiar enough with both games.

Having grown up in county Tipp' the center and birth place of the GAA , never once have I ever heard anyone say *Are you coming for a game of GAA?* GAA is the name of the organization that controls and organizes the venues and the games up and down the country. It makes more sense to say hurling or gaelic football.

BTW does anyone fancy a game of FAI?..or if you're Northern Irish IFA or if you're Scottish SFA? or if you're English do you fancy a game of FA?

Hi Terry how high is the standard? I met a supporter in Paddy's Wintherthur some time back but haven't made a game yet.

The standard is pretty decent - Luxembourg and Brussels have got excellent teams, the Zurich team is a mixed bag - a lot of very solid players and then a few more like myself who are still learning the sport. Everyone is welcome of any age (there's one chap around 40 who trains with us) standard (I've literally only played the game 4 times and still got a chance to take a runout in the last tournament of the season, albeit on loan to a team who arrived with only 6 players!) and gender (the girls are desperate to make up the numbers for a full camogie team and are just as competitive as the lads are!)

Basically whether you're just a "social" player looking for some weekend exercise or a competitive player looking for some tournaments against good opposition I'm sure you'll find what you're after!

I apologise if I was not 100% clear on what I meant. I was referring to Gaelic Football. As you can clearly tell, I'm new to this forum, and I made a mistake. No need to loop the noose just yet, I'd hope.

Gaelic is a great game for amateurs. It's easy enough to pick up, is great exercise, and is normally associated with a good social life.

I have no experience training people or teaching them the rules, but I'd be more than willing to impart what little knowledge I have to anyone who's interested.

Swisstree, even in Tipp, i believe "Gaah" is an accepted term for the sport of football or hurling. (Watching Gaah, Playing Gaah. Getting beaten by Waterford in the hurling semi's...)

I believe you, though never heard it before.. but then again you're the Footballer therefore the expert.. definitely not me being a girl n' all.. though I do have a nasty scar on me shin from a hurley when I was a kid

Well I'm by no means an expert... But I always thought getting battered with a hurl was a rite of passage in Tipp, Girls and all....

I'm based in Nyon, I'd happily travel for either football or preferably hurling if there was any to be had in Lausanne. Saw the Zurich note as well, seems a bit far for a puck around.....even though I am 39, I am sure I could hold my own despite my advanced years... ..... for the record, I'm amazed that tipp man has never heard the term to play a bit of gaa (prononuced gaaaahhhhhhhh) either!! (and the rest of you are a bunch of pedants)

hi, there'd be a few of us in geneva willing to get something going, even if it meant travelling up to Lausanne ... i think its 40 mins on a train but once or twice a week wouldnt hurt.
And for my money i think the term GAA is widely used and even if it isnt (which it is) the sarcastic repsonse was a bit mincey!

I'm a football player (soccer) but played Gaelic Football in school. Wouldn't mind a kick about if the timing was convenient. Based in Lausanne.

the Hurling club in Zurich has just started a football team also. We're aiming to have a team ready for the Munich tournament in mid-July, and are also looking to organise a match against a club from Dublin in October.

Lausanne to Zurich or vice versa is probably too far for a regular trip, but if you lads do get something organised, maybe we could organise a challenge match or something? Even better if you were starting a hurling team, as clearly we have that already......
