Ski Day Trips From Basel? Anyone recommend anything?

We are interested in ski day trips but from Basel it seems more difficult than say Zurich. Can anyone recommend any resorts? We are at mixed stages - my husband ski's well, children hardly at all and me somewhere in between.

Alternatively if anyone has any good recommendations for hotels in resports that are a) not totally crazy on price and b) will accept one night weekend bookings again it would be much appreciated.

Many thanks in advance.

I used to fly to Basel and always sent to Grindelwald (sp?) for skiing.

Pop over to Germany and to the Feldberg resort.

www.liftverbund-feldberg.de

Ideal for the beginner but offers plenty of pistes for advanced skiers and boarders alike.

Spot on la.

Sorry, but I must add my 2cents here.

The above times you are offering as from Basel... are partially not even
possible, even in the Summer on a dry Sunday morning... early!

For example, I know the route to Samnaun very well. OK, I am not in Basel,
I am near (10 Autobahn minutes) Sargans. Still, I figure 2h45 from here to
Samnaun. Departing here at 7:am... arrival usually 9.45 - as late as 10:am.

Here (Buchs) to Basel is generally figured with 2h plus depending on traffic
through Zürich.

Scott,

You seem to be assuming driving, right?

By train, leaving Basel at 6:01 would get you to Zermatt at 9:14, i.e. 3:13, not too far from the three hours suggested.

Not being a skier I have no idea how convenient it is to carry skis, boots etc in the train, but the existence of the Snow'n'Rail program strongly implies that it can be done

I obviously did not test the (many) other times in the list, but they may well be possible.

Hmm .. I obviously should have tested a few others.

Train Basel Andermatt is about three hours, not 1.5. Basel Champex-Lac is close to five hours. Hence I assume that Carlodons was referring to driving times, and was, as Scott suggested, optimistic.

Many of the times quoted are reasonable but not the ones across or deeper into the alps. SBB gives a time of 4:11 from Basel to St. Moritz which is a bit higher than 3 hours suggested time.

To answer the question, just pick up a map and choose some resorts on the north side of the Alps for quicker access from Basel. Engelberg is pretty close and the Bernese Oberland is as well. There are also many smaller resorts in this region to choose from.

Take a look at the following link for a decent map: http://www.rideguide.ch/de/

I would suggest Abelboden/Lenk. It is about two hours from Basel. If you don't need
to stay direct in the resort, there are plenty of reasonable hotels.

I was there about a week ago, and the conditions were pretty good. There has been a good snowfall since then so
the conditions are even better. :-)

I am assuming that you are traveling by auto. The times would increase 30-45
minutes with public transport.

Re: Ski Day Trips From Basel? Anyone recommend anything?

Hi Nathau,

No, I'm not affiliated to the British Ski Club.

I would be familiar with their website though having used it for ski info for a number of years.

Just trying to help with the question posted!
