Mountain Biking in 2009

In past years the mountain bikers in the Zurich area have had fairly regular Tuesday evening rides on Uetliberg and Zuriberg. We have also done a few weekend day trips to try to experience some trails a little further afield.

Since most of the people who have attended these rides with any level of regularity in the past now ride together as a matter of course, I am trying to judge if there is any interest in a regular Tuesday evening English Forum mountain bike meet up in the Zurich area. If you are interested in meeting like minded individuals to make use of the longer evenings and explore some of the trails around Zurich then let me know through this thread.

If you are not from Zurich, but would be interested in riding on a weekend somewhere else then speak up here too. Who knows what can be arranged.

Re: Mountain Biking in 2009

I'm keen to make the trip into Zürich a couple of evenings this year so would be happy if you organised the events like previously. Otherwise, I'll just PM you and hopefully tag along on an unannounced ride.

I'm getting a bivvy bag this year and planning to spend a couple of nights under the stars somewhere in the Alps. Heading out of town on Friday afternoons, riding for a few hours, camping, cooking, eating, drinking, sleeping and then riding on Saturday morning and back home by lunchtime.

EDIT: and by the way, THANKYOU Eire for all your organisational efforts.

Ha ha, I just logged in with the purpose of posting a Tuesday night Uetliberg ride, a cut and paste jobbie of those announced by Eire last year. So consider that a yes

Wasn't mountain biking on Uetliberg banned..? I could have sworn I read something about that not too long ago.

No it wasn't, the building of illegal trails was banned, and the bringing of bikes up on the train was banned (although people still do it). The agreement between Staadt Zurich and the bikers was that the city would build bike trails for the bikers, and they would then stop building trails themselves through the forest. By banning use of the train it reduces the traffic on the legal trails. This was run as a pilot project for three years until last year, and last year it was decided to make it permanent.

Biking up is allowed on nearly all of the nature streets, and down is allowed on the maintained bike trails.

No, but legally you cant just ride wherever you like

This is the map of official trails. The red one going down to Treimli is the one referred to as the Antenna trail. Though in the last week I have twice encountered suicidal walkers trying to walk up it

Yea, I nearly introduced myself to two of those hikers in a not very appealing way. It wasn't clever to in the middle of a trail around a blind corner on one of the steepest parts of the trail.

They can be lucky it was me at the front and not a downhiller.

I missed this post. Don't be shy, the rides we do up the Uetliberg go up the nature roads, so it's not technical at all. We often take the Antenna trail down, which I admit daunted me in the first place, but you get over that. If you haven't had any experience or your bike is not up to the task, the nature trails down are an option.

I ride something much simpler like this:

Re: Mountain Biking in 2009

Semi on topic.. I was driving once from Triemli going uphill towards Waldegg (Uetliberg) when I noticed a guy on a mountain bike in the bike lane pumping up the hill at a pretty good pace. I did a double take because I realized the guy only had one leg..!! He was inspiring to watch, I'm sure there was no way I could have kept pace with him had I been on 2 wheels.

Evenin

Tuesday is usually my footy night, but MTB has priority
so count me in. Am also happy to go (almost) any other day as well.

Just came back from Uetliberg... downhill trail was quite muddy, but good fun.

Anyhow, please let me know time/date/meeting place and I would be happy to join.

Unless someone else decides to organise then it won't happen this week. My bike is in for service and I won't have it back till the end of the week. Everything going well normal programming will resume next Tuesday with the MTB rides.

If there is enough interest I may organise an MTB tour in the Zurich region next Saturday.
