This is just a quick plug for the Zuerich hurling club(Inneoin). You may have wandered into Paddy's and seen a load of Irish lads on the telly chasing a small ball around a pitch with sticks in their hands, and hunger in their eyes....if you were curious to know more, this might be the thread for you.
Hurling has been played in Ireland for over 2,000 years. To describe it is difficult, but it's a bit like hockey except it's played in the air as well. It's claimed as the fastest field game in the world, and very popular in Ireland. The club in Zuerich is open to men and women, and currently is made up of at least 5 different nationalities. Every one is welcome, whether you're the next DJ Carey or an absolute beginner. We also supply all the necessary equipment, so all you need is yourself and some basic sports gear.
Training takes place twice a week, and we take part in the European Championships, which involves a few cool trips a year. If you're interested in playing or even just curious for info, reply to the thread and I can provide some more info.
We are also looking to start a Gaelic Football section. Gaelic Football is possibly a bit more familiar to people from outside Ireland, being quite similar to Aussie rules, and playing with a ball similar to a regular football. As far as we know there has never been a team in Switzerland, so we are hoping to break new ground with this.
If you're up for something a bit different and interested in keeping fit, these could be the sports for you. If you are interested, do reply to this thread.

I can definitely recommend this, only took it up last Ocotber, already got a silver medal on my shelf, a forthcoming trip to a tournament in Luxembourg, and a fine collection of bruised knuckles

Small intro: I am a 35 old female (not a girl anymore I guess) from Holland (originally), just moved to Richterswil. No previous experience in the sport, but I did play tennis and (a little bit of) field hockey.
We are an Irish Gaelic Football Club based in Saint Gallen Switzerland who aim to promote Irish culture, sport and friendship in our little region in North East Switzerland. We are interested in promoting our games in any way possible even just to converse in English for those who want to learn or German for those who wish to teach us.

We are a brand new club based in Saint Gallen Switzerland and we aim to carry on the good GAA work of the Zurich GAA and hopefully improve the level of Gaelic Games over in Switzerland. During the All-Ireland Final this year Michael Daly, John Hynes and Dermot Fallon hatched a plan to develop a GAA club in Saint Gallen. We aimed to capitalise on the current diaspora living in Saint Gallen as well as eventually hoping to entice the Swiss into Gaelic Games. Our main goal this year was to have enough members to amalgamate a team with Zurich to compete in the Maastricht tournament, Netherlands which is the culmination of the European GAA season. We have completed this task successfully and we excitedly look forward to the future. We hope to make the club part of the local community in the future with Swiss members and Saint Gallen University members. When we started the club we had a first meeting where we stated our goals, plans for expansion and realistic achievements that we could hope to attain. Then we began training sessions which were strong from the very start with our very own Stephen Murphy taking the sessions with much vim and vigour. From January and February we will work on consolidating the hard work done since September by recruiting new members, hopefully participating in tournaments and generally making ourselves known to the GAA community. We see the game, the culture and the social aspect associated with the game as a fantastic way of making friends, raising social interaction and also keeping fit. We aim to represent the many nationalities living within Switzerland when we begin our recruitment drive in Jan/Feb and this will hopefully ensure a progressive and bright future for the club. As we are working hard keep your eyes peeled for new and exciting updates from your Saint Gallen Bears.
It all started less that three weeks the 5/9/10 ago in Paddy Reillys Irish Bar in Zurich when John Hynes, Dermot Fallon and Michael Daly had a plan to set up a GAA club in Saint Gallen to help Zurich GAA but also to hopefully have enough interest to sustain our own club. They are the modern day Cusack, Croke and Davin the founder members. Saint Gallen is a city that has had Irish teachers since about the year 2000 but this is the first year when we had sustained interest or sufficent numbers to go about the process of setting up a club. The club in its current state is a reflection of not only the people here this year but the people from years previous who have made vital contributions you know who you are guys we thank you for your help in the past and hope you continue to influence us and support us in any way you can thanks guys. Our club represents a blend of Irish, Scottish, Canadian expats living and working in Saint Gallen Switzerland combined with students from the University of Saint Gallen, Swiss friends, German friends, American, Australian, South African, New Zelanders and anyone weird wild or wonderful enough to pick up a football or hurl. Did you ever try foot ball or Hurling? The winter indoor training for Hurling has started on Saturday afternoons, could be a gentler introduction to the sport. If you want more details send me a PM & I can pass them onto you.
