Starting to run.

Hello all.

I want to discuss on here topics which we spoke about on our Thursday runing group or get frequently asked.

Whatever your level of fitness you should comfortably be able to build from nothing to running continuously for 30 minutes in the space of six to eight weeks. All you need to do is make a commitment to run at least three times a week and follow this simple run programme which will gradually ease you towards the goal.

A few things to bear in mind:
  • Allow at least a day between runs when you begin.
  • If in doubt, slow down. You should be able to hold a conversation while you run.
  • Respecting your body is the best route to progression. If you are feeling run down or not so well, give yourself a day off and wait until tomorrow (Rome was not built in a day).
  • Invest in a good pair of trainers from a specialist shop. The most injuries are caused by badly fitting trainers.
  • Don't sit down, its the worse thing you can do when you get home from work, get out for a run straight away.
  • Combat cold morning runs by puting your running shoes next to a radiator or somewhere warm ( they seem much more welcoming )
  • If your unsure about any injuries ask someone who knows what they are talking about ( i.e. a Sports doctor or Sports physio) and not someone who will profit from advising you to come and see them regularly.
  • If you can run as a group. catching up on the gossip makes your run so much more enjoyable and takes your mind offwhat your body is saying
  • Set a goal,a stadt lauf or a bikini size to motivate your training.
  • Think positive thoughts and you will get there!
Hope you all are enjoying your running and look forward to seeing everyone old and new at our Thursday night Basel runs.

Keep on running

Re: Starting to run.

Hello

I am reasonably new to Zurich and need to find a beginner-friendly running club since all I have been doing since I arrived is sit on the sofa watching French soaps and eating cheese. Nice way to spend some time but not so good for my backside. I can probably run for about 45-60 mins but very, very slowly. Sorry if there's already posts about this. Any advice much appreciated, cheers MrsM ps based in Wiedikon

Hi

Come and join the Zurich running group on Wednesday evening. We have some easy sessions or more difficult ones. It is always easier to go with a group than on your own anyway.
