Some friends and I are organizing a bicycle ride across Switzerland this summer. We're going to be staying in hotels and all of our luggage is going to be carried in a minibus. We're looking for a few more people to join us. Please contact me directly if you think you might be interested.

A few more details about intensity and price may help some people to decide if they're interested. E.g., How many km's per day? What is the route - mountainous or flat/rolling? Trails or road? What are your estimates for the fixed costs (hotels, bag transport)?

I would love to join, but I do not have a bike yet. I am still settling down in Switzerland, been here for 2 months. I am worry I am not fit enough for the long journey too...

Hi John,

You're going to love it. I've cycled across Switzerland three times (routes 5, 8, & 9) and this summer a few friends and I are doing the #3. An alternative to hotels is the 'schlaf im Stroh!', where you pay CHF 20.- or so to sleep in a barn. It's not for everybody, but definitely adds to the adventure.

Detailed maps of the nine national cycling routes are available at most sport and book shops.

Anyone else wanting to give bike touring in Switzerland a try should be aware that there are many "velotels" around (web link). They are reasonably-priced hotels that are often on the national bike routes and offer services for cyclists like a bike storage room, maybe a work-stand for fixing the bike, and you're likely to meet fellow bike tourers there to share tips and stories with.

Just a word of warning about the "sleep in straw" thing. Watch out if you suffer hay fever/allergies, even slightly. I've seen (and heard about) people who never usually have problems suffer quite badly. Myself, I really enjoyed it. Stayed at a nice one cycling from Andermatt to Chur.

One suggestion: instead of "joining", why don't you start a thread and let the route evolve by discussion, and attract like-minded people.
