For those of us who love winter hiking that is when the tourists leave and the "real" hiking season starts.

I was wondering if anybody knows where i can do a snow shoe hike around geneva area (nothing too difficult), However some of the party do not have all the equipment, is there anywhere you can rent all the necessary clothing/ snow shoes etc...

a superb trip is the Col de Marchairuz. which i believe is the highest road open in the Jura in winter, you can park at the hotel then set off along the path to Mont Tendre.The views of the across to the alps and high Jura are superb if it has not snowed for a few days walking boots will be fine as path will be tracked. Just check the forecast as allways. I think the post bus runs to the col from Nyon.

AFAIK, the post bus to Marchairuz only runs a couple of times a day on the weekends in the summer, there's no service during the rest of the year. Access to the Jura with public transport in winter is easiest by taking the train to La Givrine (near St Cergue) from Nyon.

Great news guys. A Christmas Present to Hikers. The Printing Map Feature in Wanderland.ch had been improved.

A while back Mr. L used the 'contact' mail address on the Wanderland Site to ask if the maps, which are brilliant for hiking, could not also be adjusted to print in the 'portrait' form instead of just 'landscape'. Until now, this has meant that walking north to south, one needs a narrow, quite short stripe on each of several A4 pages. The reply came back that nothing can be done.

Needing a map for a walk this afternoon, Mr L. opened the site up, and, Lo and Behold, Tidings of Great Joy, there is now the option to print 'portrait' and also the list of scales runs

1:10,000, 1:20,000, 1:25,000, 1:50,000, 1:100,000
1:200,000, 1:500,000, 1:1,000,000, 1:1,400,000

which is a great improvement too. Just shows that there are really people in these organisations and that it is sometime worth taking the trouble to ask.

I am looking for recomandation for a hiking trail with kids and sledges in the north east part of switzerland, in the summer it is very easy to find one does any one have recomnded trails for winter?

You could have a look at this site, the swiss hiking website, it's in english too. Also handy is the option to be able to print sections of the maps so you can take them with you. Hope it's of some help.

I recently heard about this App - Peak Finder to enable hikers to check the name of the mountains they can see. Don't know if anyone is interested but if I often went hiking without either Mr L or my son-in-law I, for one, would be interested.

What if you're new to hiking, have a fear of heights but want to conquer those fears?...I've hiked quite a bit in the Jura, went nearly to the cabin in Moiry (Last bit I couldn't really wrap my head around )

I figure it gets better in time but unsure of where to go next...Some easy hikes end up being pretty noneasy

I recommend doing some hiking in the appenzell area: on many trails you are quite high up with quite a view down, but you are always on a sturdy safe trail that's quite wide.

I go trekking for 3 weeks in the himalayas in october and intend to hike every weekend i can before then in my adopted homeland, there's some great inspiration here from several likeminded folk, much appreciated
