Anyone around zurich play golf at all? I've been wanting to play for ages and now the weathers here, just wondering if anyone can recommend a course or if anyone wants to go for a game?

Not in Zurich, but always prepared to drive for a game. Have you got your Platz Reif ? Required to play on Swiss courses. Another way of squeezing money from the ignorant masses ....

rite ... so you need a permit to play at a course :s arse was hoping you just pay at a course

You have to go & show a nice man that you know how to swing a club, know the rules etc. All pretty simple. Costs around 100chf.
I took mine at my local Migros Golf School .... 6 holes of practical followed by an open book multiple choice. My examiner gave me a book with all the relevant questions highlighted. Needless to say, boredom set in & I only scored 95% ....

This will only allow you play at the 8 Migros courses of course (poor unintended pun), to play across Switzerland you then have to shell for an additional 300 bucks that allows you to play across all courses. Will have to look out the bumph for you.

If only it was that simple. Granted to get a platzreife is straightforward - but it can take a lot longer theoretical course followed by practical exam. IF you can persuade the coach that you have played a lot before he will help you. Easiest is if you ever had a handicap! Then you can produce your card and be registered or even play at most clubs. You can also use the card to qualify for membership of the Association of Swiss Gold http://www.asg.ch This is what you were referring to with your 300 bucks. This does not however allow you to play at all courses. For that you will need to have a full handicap and indeed on some courses be invited. It depends on whether the course recognises the ASG or whether they allow uninvited players - believe me when I say that exactly as in the UK not all do!

I am currently practising for my "platzerlaubnis". Mostly in Otelfingen.
Anyway, there is one place around Zurich where you don't need "platzerlaubnis"/"platzreife": http://www.golfnuolen.ch/ (german).

If you've played Golf before... elsewhere in the world... and already have a Handicap.. then you don't need to go through the whole Platzreife spiel. Just need to show them your handicap certificate.

A friend asked me last wee if i would like to play golf. I referredto what I learnt on this thread regarsing the test etc.

He produced a shabby looking plastic card with a name of a golf course etc and a few numbers of rounds he did. I asked what it was for. He said that when he gave it to the golf club no questions were asked and as is now in the computer he no longer needs to show it.

Needless to say it wasnt the real McCoy, and I thought I would pass on the amount of scrutiny give to cards from foreign lands.

If youre the kind of player that miscounts his shots, doesnt count an air-shot or throws their ball from the bushes when noone is looking,perhaps this the answer for you.

If you see some of the village folk that try their hand at the game, then you will understand why.

The fact is most UK people know what the game is about, basic ettiquette and rules, even if they only have ever seen it on TV.
So when the Swiss turn up at the club, all havoc can run wild I should no its my job. (used to work at a Migros club....never again! Golf factories)

yup you're right... I did something similar... less shabby though... got a letter from the Club Pro (and I wasn't a member there) who I took lessons from - to say that I had a Handicap 36 and Voila... freedom to play anywhere that allows anyone to play with that kindda handicap...

I live in Schinznach bad - there is a 9 hole golf club nearby. This is what the advert says..

They have pitch and putt also - one day I will maybe even try it. It is only 25 minutes from Zurich by train - change at brugg and it is 3 minutes.

I think that is just a 9 hole pitch and put.

On the subject of handicaps, join the English Golf Union as an associate member, send in some cards, get a handicap and off you go .

Belay that, I just looked them up again and it's way more complex than it used to be . I had details of another international golf union through the post a while ago. I'll post the details here when I find them.

It looks like there are possibilities of forming an independant golf club - to be really useful this would need to be affiliated to the Swiss Golf Association - I wonder if that is feasible. They say a minimum of 10 members would be required.

I will look into it some more......

Hi Swissbob - just wait until they finish the one next to Rheinfelden - it looks like it could be quite serious. Every day I pass it by train and it seems to be taking shape nicely. The 19th hole looks nice also -a whole castle

Seen it, don't know much about it - will it be another nose up their bums private Swiss club I wonder? Does look big and interesting though.

Rheinfelden will be a 9 hole (public I think) and pretty basic at that.
