Be careful when hiring out ropes and so on from the halls, not only for the obvious reason that you don't know how many falls it has taken (I expect them to be pretty careful on that anyway), but because they may expect you to use a different type of belaying technique and/or device "because your way damages the rope more". Just saying. Is this the correct place for a bolted vs. non bolted argument? |

I think, being a social event, we will be sticking to top rope and bouldering for first time out.

Hi Ian,
thanks for the info on hiring kit (afraid i haven't got enough posts yet to be allowed to send proper thanks), how experienced a person are you looking for to help out? I've been climbing for three years, would feel confident to keep an eye on someone new to belaying to make sure people stay safe and give a few tips on technique.
Cheers,
Ali. | Quote: | | | | | I am interested in organising an indoor climbing event for English Forum. It is more designed as a social event, aimed also to attract people who have never climbed before. Lets say between 8-10 people all up. The expected venue would be Schlieren. Date: Maybe a Saturday in late September.
But I would prefer a really experienced climber to come on board and help me with this one. Please PM me if are willing help out (it would be greatly appreciated).
Remember, such an event should also eventually increase the number of available english climbing partners!
Cheers, Ian. | | | | | |

count me in.
i climbed in the us, in w virginia and in sw pensylvania, but am not yet qualified to help much with the ropes.
(there's a tiny chance i won't be around in late sept., depending entirely on finding/not finding an apartment sometime soon. but i'll try to make it!)
good idea, thanks!

Is that enough, litespeed? Just, from my point of view, please don't organise for the last weekend in September or first in October as I think we will be away on holiday.

If there's enough interest maybe we can make this into a regular thing - it's always good to have a few climbing partners.

If the timing works i would be happy to participate and lend the group some experience. i would strongly prefer to avoid mon-thurs evenings in schlieren, given the crowds.
also happy, as previously indicated, to help in the same capacity at an outdoor venue - there are many user-friendly crags where this could be safely and easily done.
cheers

Well, there appears to be sufficient interest, and if everyone is good to there word then we should have somewhere between 10-15 people.
The big worry is the hall operators. The only way to avoid hassles is if everyone, even newbies, sign an indemnity basically saying they know what they are doing. Given that basic instruction in top-rope takes 10 minutes, it shouldn't be an issue. It would keep the costs much lower, without having to pay an instructor (or instructors) for the group.
My suggestion in this case would be to pair newbies with experienced climbers for the first session, so as to keep things under the radar and make it look like a coincidental meeting of paired groups rather than one large group event.
Maybe anyone with better experience of the hall or its operators can weigh in on this.

welcome to Zürich! I definetly do not have your experience since I've only climbed for two years (and that was a year ago, I guess I can climb up to 6a), however if you don't mind we can give it a try. Are you looking for indoor or outdoor climbing?
Zürich has a great indoor climbing centre in Schlieren, good for crap weather.
I've got all the equipment, if you're interested just PM me. (I normally have quite tough working hours but late afternoon 19:00-22:00 works or WE)
Cheers
Andrea

Hey guys,
I would be interested in coming along too. I will be living outside of Zurich, but I will come out to Zurich to climb with you guys. I am a rookie myself.

Hello
I have also just moved to Zurich and would like to come along to do some climbing. I did a few climbs inside, and outside a couple of years back, but pretty much a newbie. I have some shoes though! I'm away next week, but back around the 1st/2nd.....
Cheers
Helen
p.s. I might need some help getting to Schlieren, my knowledge of public transport here is still pretty limited.....unless other people were heading out from Zurich HB or elsewere in the centre of town?

Okay, sorry for the delay. Events have been posted in the Calendar.. 2 Events 13 and 20 October, so everyone should at least be able to make 1 event.

Well I can't make either of these days, a visit from my mum on the 13th and a visit from my dad on the 20th, I can really say to either of them "thank you fro traveling all the way to Zürich to see me, now I'm off climbing".
So are there any other days proposed?
Has anyone tried this new climbing centre Minimum Bouldering? http://www.klettern.ch
I have never been, but I thinking of giving it a go. Also on a map it also looks easier to get to by public transport then the Schlieren one. But don't take my word for it, I could be wrong.
Cheers
Matthew

I just went to Minimum today, it's a small but friendly centre, pretty cheap (CHF12 per visit or something like CHF400 for a year pass). It was quiet but the weather is still good so will see how it gets over the winter. Not much for the novice, lots of overhangs and tough problems.
By the way, their opening time on saturday is 11, not 1 as it says on their website.
There's a little bar but not much food, no shop (you can buy some basics like chalk, finger tape) and there's a good collection of climbing mags including US ones for when you're pumped.
They seem to have a load of old climbing/walking clothes for free but I didn't ask further yet.
