[Zurich] In-line Skating - tuition needed

Any idea where/who can teach me (and possibly a couple more 'English-speakers') inline skating in English in Zurich?
-Dave.

Re: In-line Skating - tuition needed

If you bought your skates here, it's quite likely the store will offer a couple of lessons in the purchase price. If not, ask at a sports store: they'll know someone!

Failing that, get me a few beers afterwards and I'll help you

I just put the things on and started skating, I don't know how much you really need lessons. Just wear pads.

Re: In-line Skating - tuition needed

sorry Devinder (I was viewing to see if anyone else had a good answer!).
I actually did a class a few years back after the method Principia Discordia refers to failed me, ending in a painful and embarrassing run-in - literally - with a metal garbage trolley. However, I don't know if the guy is still doing them, nor do I remember his name - he was doing it as a small business, so there's a chance it simply didn't take off for him. It was well worth the money and effort though.

Re: In-line Skating - tuition needed

It seems no one really knows this service for english speakers. I suggest just calling up schools and see if they can teach you in english.

A short list can be found:
http://www.bfu.ch/beratung_sport/inline/inline_d.pdf

Another:
ISW-Sports / Die Profis für Inline-Skating Nordic Walking Langlauf

There would be more listed under google. Try plugging this line in:
inline schule zurich site:.ch

Good luck.

Put your right foot out at 45° right of centerer. Do the same with your left foot in the opposite direction. Place 80% of your weight on your right foot and push gently forwards with your right leg transferring your weight to the left foot which starts rolling forward. At the same time lifting the right foot off the ground.

Repeat this with the left foot and so on.

That'll be CHF100 for the first lesson.

Re: In-line Skating - tuition needed

If I can do that successfully without kissing the pavement, the CHF 100 is yours! I still rely on the tip my skate back and put my weight on the stopper method, not very graceful but eventually does the trick...

I personally think the grab the nearest lampost and try not to look like too much of a moomin seems to do the trick!

Seriously I cannot stop properly either I guess I need to practice.

That right foot left foot thing sounds a bit like a snow plough though

Keeps the muscles warm for winter I guess

I'll offer the same advice for CHF 89. There's a deal! Send me cash only please, via PM.

As for stopping, find your balance on one foot and bring the other behind you, on a 90° angle. Then firmly put your back foot down. This needs to be done firmly, otherwise you'll slide off in the wrong direction. Best to tilt the back foot 45° from the ground to discourage the wheels from rolling*.

As you do this, smoothly shift your weight onto the back foot until you've come to a standstill. It's pretty effective when done with confidence, so best practice a few times, aware you're likely to do a little pirouette until you get the hang of it. Nearby lamp posts are a good safety reserve. I've been Rollerblading for about 10 years now and still can't use the stopper

*Be sure to regularly change your wheels around to keep them even.

Re: In-line Skating - tuition needed

took my new roller blades out today...learnt that knowing how to stop is an important thing to try and get the hanging of when I rolled past someone I know, but carried on another 5 metres untill I found convenient post to stop on, so I could go and say 'hi' back!

Re: In-line Skating/need urgent advise

Still need somebody to teach? I learned it by myself, too, and I am absolutely not a prefessional - but if you find some time, I am planning to get my skates out be next weekend (June 2 or 3) and you are welcome to join!

Re: In-line Skating - tuition needed

hello,

I had kind of luck - friend of mine was once an instructor for in line skating in Migros klubschule and he was nice enough to show me how to break.

if all instructors there are like him, it is a good place to learn - and I am sure they speak English as well...

so, Migros Klubschule. even if it sounds soooo Swiss

have a good day,

Agu

Re: [Zurich] In-line Skating - tuition needed

BUMP!

My husband finally complained about the pair of brand new rollerblades that I bought some 3 years ago that are taking up space in our attic. (In my defense they were on clearance for 50 bucks!)
I genuinely do want to learn how to rollerblade but do not have the guts to strike out on my own. My husband does not rollerblade and even if he did, well, see my thread "New to Skiiing"
I know this thread is old but I am wondering if there's still an EF secret rollerblading society that gets together? I am looking for an open "rollerblading" jam of some sort where even beginner's like me can join and learn a thing or two. Is there interest in putting one together?
I don't think I can personally afford proper lessons. It seems like Mark used to have something organized sort of?

Ok, cheers!
Leyla

Re: [Zurich] In-line Skating - tuition needed

If you need to get a group together for a lesson I would be more than happy to sign up and I think I can presuade two friends too join too. Maybe if we got a group together, one of the schools could organise an english class.

At the moment I can just about stand in them as long as I'm holding onto something. But only in that sexy knees and toes pointing towards each other but slowly drifting apart and my arse sticking out. Then as soon as I feel any sort of confidence, the ground jerks and I'm spreadeagle on the floor.
