Cricket in Switzerland

Found this article over at Swissinfo and thought it was interesting

I must say I never thought cricket would be seen outside countries of the former British Empire. I´ve tried a few times to explain the game to Swiss and Germans, but you can imagine their horror when I tell them it takes all day, and that is the FAST version of the game. Understandable really

Your thoughts on cricket? Is it a good thing for the Swiss, or is cricket a game that you really have to grow up with to like or understand?

Swiss and other continental Europeans may enjoy Cricket as an exotic adventure. For a while, Rugby and American Football were on their way up, but for quite some time now have gone into stagnation.

So, I do not expect Cricket to become well established in Switzerland or other areas of Continental Europe.

Yes it is a sports of the Commonwealth of Nations, the former British Empire

We had a cricket team in Bern. Don't know if they're still around. I don't think that's the only team. Would be a bit boring.

Hi there

I've recently moved to Switzerland from South Africa and I'm looking for a cricket club to join in the summer. I work in Zug, but I might live in Zurich so a club in either city will do.

I played cricket at a decent level in South Africa and I've had stints overseas with Oxford Cricket Club in the UK and Amsterdam Cricket Club in the Netherlands. As much as I take the game seriously and play to win, I'm a massive fan of the social part of the game and the drinks afterwards.

Cricket is in my blood and I want to continue playing during my time here in Switzerland. Can you suggest any clubs that might be suitable for me?

swiss people are very focused on time (who would have thought). To them time = money = precious.

5 days of cricket is a poor use of time in the eyes of the swiss and so they stay clear of it.

in the end, you dont know how awesome cricket really is until you've tried it yourself.

A fellow British friend of mine who also has the "time = money = precious" outlook and focus to most things in life, still manages to find time for his beloved cricket no matter what and even stays up round the clock to watch test series etc live if he has to.

IF there are people who want to build some "structures" for American Football, Rugby or Cricket, and need some public approvals or even some money support from the state and it comes to a public vote, they will have MY definite YES-vote, not because I am even remotely interested in these weird sports but because I am in favour of a multi-sided cultural and sportive life

In US, we had a cricket team at the University. The University funded the activities and the county/city partially paid for the synthetic pitch. There were times when Americans would be stop by to watch this unusual game and out of curiosity would come back again to play

I appologize for late reply abt Swiss Cricket.

Yes, Switzerland play cricket under ICC & SCA ( Swiss Cricket association) is the governing body of Switzerland. We are playing for swiss league & most of international expats playing much decent cricket here in summer.

I am playing for Zug Cricket club and if you are interested to play for our club, please contact ASAP as registration process is going on. You need to register prior play league match with a club. Almost every kanton has at least one league team.
