| | | Re: Snow sports 2009-10 | Quote: | | | | | Hi all.
Due to a clerical error in Canada some years ago that never got corrected over here, I get a vacation day on Monday to celebrate Fasnacht.
As such, I was thinking about getting away for a weekend trip Sat to Mon. Here is where I was thinking at the moment:
Val D'Anniviers
Champex-Lac
Zermatt
Any guidance is appreciated!
regards,
tdb | | | | |
Only have been to Zermatt once over the weekend from the above resorts and it rocked. As usual weekends plus good weather equals attract lots of crowds. Monday should be ok though. You can also check other picks of the resort: [Zürich] Skiing/Boarding on Weekends 09 Winter season (Just skip pics of this clut who hardly stood on the planks, I mean me not other colleague )

As a complete ski novice i have some questions that experienced skiers in this thread will definitely have an answer upon:
> What's the difference between skiing poles compared to walking poles? changing the basket and go for it? or is there a reason that ski poles are one piece instead of three-step?
> The use of a helmet for skiing. is everyone nowadays falling over each other, or did an off-piste skiing garment find a quick and easy way into normal skiing by making it normal in ski lessons? (where i expect the speeds to be rather low)

Consider carbon poles - reasonable prices now and shouldn't break at all. I have extendable poles for ski touring (where you need to adjust the length) but some ancient cheapo alu ones for downhill (now very bent).
Helmets are always worth it. Pistes are hard - very hard, so are other skiers heads. A possible life saver (who was that actress that died after a simple fall at low speed on a nearly flat piste last year?).

and yes i was going to rent ski poles and not trying to break my good walking poles on it, as for that price difference...

Zermatt is shaping up for an epic Sunday. As is elsewhere Papa G, may have to bail on Operation Friday unless we can move to morning if I need to get out Friday night to fit in Sat. In any event, I'm thinking overnight Sat/Sun trip this weekend for ski day Sun & mon, returning for Monday night, http://www.j2ski.com/snow_forecast/S...matt_snow.html
