Have a great day! Is Merlingen-Hasliberg that much further? Let me know if you change your mind!

Quite possibly skiing on Sunday. What is your skill level and where were you thinking of heading?
Only been to Flumsberg so up for a change if you know another resort of easy access from Zurich?
Good ski level, I avoid to fall and I ski, not snowboarding.
Would you be up for skiing Sunday ?

Re: Skiing on Sunday

I will probably go skiing on Sunday.

Intermediate skier, mostly red and moderate black runs. Got my own boots but still renting skis/poles.

Not sure where yet -- there are a few place I want to (re)try but mostly up to the weather and moment. I normally use Snow'n'Rail from Zürich HB, if not going with someone by car.

Re: Snow sports 2009-10

I am looking buddies for easy randonee skiing or alpine touring. I am just getting started and tend to be a bit slower than most people I go with. I like look at the pretty scenery more than race to the summit. I also am just learning to read the snow and avalanche conditions so I would love to find people who know a bit more than me (but are not super fast). I am free most weekends for day trips from Lausanne area!

Let me know if you are planning anything and wouldn't mind if I tag along (tomorrow???)

Thanks.

My advice to you is do an avalanche course first. Most people who tour want to make sure that the people going with them are in a situation to be able to assess the risk level for themselves, and that if the sh!t does hit the fan everyone in the group knows what to do.

Guides get paid to select a safe route, if you go with others you can not expect them to accept the risk for you, you need to be able to make your own decision as to whether you go or stay.

Re: Snow sports 2009-10

Thanks to Jacek's great S&R day, I was able to discover a fun resort to ski in Meiringen-Hasliberg.

The resort has a lot to offer for a day trip. Great views down to the bottom of the valley, some lovely red runs and a fair bit of territory for free riding off the Häägen chair.

There are many ways to get up the mountain from the resort. Unless you are completely comfortable with black runs, I recommend you start your day by finding Bidmi and taking the gondola up to the Gondolelbahn-Mägisalp (lift K). This will lead you to some great wide red runs, and it seemed a little less crowded than the Sesselbahn-Käserstatt chair (lift B). Be warned - the red #10 run at the top of this lift is fairly steep, narrow, and crowded, and best to avoid to start your day!

It is a bit flat in spots, so be prepared to work for the reward. As well, there are quite a few rope lifts/rope toes, so the entire mountain may not be best for snowboarders or those more comfortable on chairlifts.

The resort gets tons of sun, and we experienced the full gamut from ice to corn(with the exception of powder ) Due to the low elevation, you may not be able to ski to the bottom. As such, I think a visit is more suitable for late Jan or early Feb.

The food prices are quite reasonable compared to other resort. The bottle of coke test came in @ 5CH (never thought I would believe that is reasonable !). Not too much apres-ski, but there are a couple of places at the bottom of each transfer point to grab a drink and recount a glorious day.

Due to the required gondolas to get up the mountain it may take some time to start skiing. The queues were about 45 min for us. Best to arrive early and avoid all the hassle.

Overall, it was a great day of skiing and I will certainly be back next year to do some free riding, especially after a big dumb of powder!

Keep in mind:

The Häägen chair is quick and a little low on the start, be prepared for a jolt!

My bad.... am sure the run is actually pretty good given the right snow conditions but when faced with an ice sheet and huge moguls for most of the top part of the run it wasn't exactly the easy warm up I had in mind

Re: Snow sports 2009-10

Add few more pics from me just to spice up how awesome the day was in Merlingen-Hasliberg yesterday.

The next picturesque ski-resort surrounded by splendid mountains with similarly spectacular landscape, which is on my "to-do-list" in canton Schwyz next to Lucerne - it will be Melchsee-Frutt. Although, it might seem to be offering less on-piste riding however off-piste possibilities should be remarkable there. My only worry is that altitude is similar to our formerly visited resort and snow might already be melted on the lower parts of the mountains.

If there's no skiing possibilty there is some great hiking in that area.... Joch Pass etc etc...

True, what cannot be skied and slided on, it can be treaded and mountain biked. I really hope that winter is not quite over yet as the offpiste technique was coming along nicely starting from Davos and I'll miss fresh powder

Re: Snow sports 2009-10

Visited Brigels this weekend.
A bit far away from zurich, 4 chairlifts and 2 T-bars, overall a bit flatter than Elm (the black slope was closed), but whoa, I haven't seen such wide slopes and so few people on a gorgeous sunny saturday. Excellent riding. Also, huge fields off-piste, I'm sure it is a great easy freeride resort after major snowfalls. Also, it had a timed race course set available to general public (for everyone with a collection of 1-franc coins), which is a good fun, and it is the first time I see such in Swiss resorts.

Highly recommended.
The resort is south-exposed, so on warmer days expect slush in the lower sections.
It doesn't have snow'n'rail, but there are day skipasses available at Aldi for CHF43.

Re: Snow sports 2009-10

If anyone is at a loose end on Friday pm I'll be taking a fairly new skier out. I haven't decided exactly where and will check the forecast closer to Friday, but Brunni is a possibility as it's a stress free place, and a nice warm up for more exciting things over the weekend, but for a beginner it's great. http://www.skiliftbrunni.ch/Default.aspx

The other option is Flumserberg, and extending it to the torchlight night run http://www.flumserberg.ch/winter/en/...ght+Skiing.htm

Anyone else planing an outing Friday pm/eve

Re: Snow sports 2009-10

I was at hasliberg too this weekend, but alas not with you fine folks.

Found the same issue of ice in places and almost slush in others from high to low. And the mogul type bits were definitely not to my taste! Still, a good day out, even if the clouds came in the afternoon.
If some more snow comes then it's definitely worth a return visit. Usually it is possible to ski back down the the car park/gondola area.

I think there might've been something wrong with the gondola when I arrived as the queue didn't move as fast as expected, and the crowds at the bottom were not really reflected at the top.

I've been told there is a cold spell coming, so fingers crossed it brings some more snow.

I was sledging at Melschee Frutt on Sunday. It seemed to me to be similar snow conditions as were in Hasliberg although obviously I didn't go on the pistes (apart from one wrong turn). Been there skiing a couple of times and it's ok but didn't enjoy it as much as other resorts. Wouldn't really recommend it for beginners (in case any are thinking of going). Can't comment on the off-piste action but there always seemed to be a decent number of people trying it so I guess it is worth a go.

I know there are many avid skiiers here. I enjoyed this article: I think we all know skiers cut of this cloth...

I dearly hope some self important arse doesn't take it upon him- or herself to delete the text, but should they do so, you can find the original article here:

Quote:
Who Really Likes Skiing Anyway?

I sigh and stumble further up the hill on our way to the ski lift, my legs performing an uncomfortable moonwalk (because there really is no other way on ski boots). My skis are constantly sliding off my shoulders and this results in my mood quickly deteriorating.
My boyfriend offers to carry my skis for me. This warms my cold heart.

Great. A ski break in the French Alps with my boyfriend and friends. Every February, the Amsterdammers head off to the mountains they so obviously lack in their own country. I ditch the office gear for salopettes, cute furry hats, and an awesome red Peak Performance jacket in which I totally look like an Ecole du Ski Francaise teacher.

We have rented a chalet for a week of uncompromised boozing and eating. Guilt free, because of the shameless lies we tell ourselves like: “Skiing is an extreme sport. You have to eat like an athlete.” And “It’s cold out there, your body needs the fuel.”

And so our days are filled with chocolate croissants for breakfast, chicken nuggets and tartiflette for lunch, Twix bars on the slopes, and litres of cheese fondue at night, drowned in an endless stream of gluhwein and après ski beer.

Every morning at eight, my friends jump out of bed and queue up for the shower. They can’t wait to put on their professional gear and “Hit the slopes man!” ready to tackle the icy red and black slopes, preferably with a names like 'le Mur' and 'Tortin'. All to show that while they may be pudding-textured number crunchers in the office, on the slopes they are true cowboys: fearless and conquering nature. I finish my fiber-free, carb-laden baguette, and join them up the mountain.

When the lift carries us to the busy slopes I start feeling uneasy. The sad thing is, I have skied almost all my life, and I will not admit that I hate it. Worse, I find it scary.

I love the idea of skiing, just not the activity itself. The vision of me and my friends wearing cute woolen jumpers in the chalet that was used in the Wham! "Last Christmas" video is the most fun I can ever imagine. My friends and I, laughing, in front of a massive fireplace with a St. Bernards dog wagging his tail. And telling the admiring crowd how I mastered the half pipe in the snow park that day. Haha, that sounds fun! But without me having to put the actual skis on...

May I please just wear my professional Peak Performance jacket to the little ski village? Just hang around with the mountain people, drink a vin chaud, and read magazines?

Alas, I cannot.

The only thing that gets me off the slopes with my credibility intact is a feigned knee injury. Although being Dutch, this is not guaranteed; all Dutch doctors graduated from the 'walk it off' school of medicine and, having been indoctrinated by this Spartan healthcare system for all their laws, my friends are unlikely to be fooled by a bogus knee strain.

One more icy black slope, one visible fracture on an X-ray to prove it, and my holiday begins.
