OK so given it's currently snowing today and weather tomorrow is supposedly going to be wonderful and sunny in most areas where is it all going to be happening for skiing tomorrow? Looking for resort ideas.... |

Nice one Eire. Where were you?
Unfortunately I'm not good enough to be a powder junkie yet but there were plenty seemingly enjoying themselves in Hasliberg today. Nice enough on piste but all the higher lifts were closed due to the winds with one only opening for a short while late morning.
It explained why it was so quiet in the valley. Mental note to next time check all aspects of the weather and resort before going on the basis of 'there was snow and it looks clear on the webcam' .

There are no pistes prepared and there isn't a proper lift as you'd know them in a ski resort. Its also about a good 20min hike from the anything that resembles civilisation.

Sometimes I discover lifts when out biking during the summer, then I get an idea of the terrain around them and go back and visit during the winter.
Other times I read about them in books, or find them on the 1:50,000 ski tour maps. Then I use google earth, 1:25,000 maps, the interweb to get more information. Then use the SLF web pages to find out how much snow has fallen in the region and what the Avalanche risk is. Call up my friends and go and check it out.
There is a huge amount of information out there about these kind of areas. You won't find them listed as ski resorts and for good reason you won't find them mentioned too much by name on the internet either.
I'm in the process of making a concerted effort to find more places like in the pictures. This place is already crowded with 60-80 people so I need to find some more similar places.

It's a short note. I took a day off tomorrow just to be able to experience one more day before decent snow disappears. I am thinking about going to Melschee-Frutt as a primary destination. Is anyone else interested to join me?

Ok, plans didn't work out today due to weather and workload so another day spent in the office ...
As the weather looks great on Friday, I'm planning to resume the mission Melschee-Frutt (I know it is a bit awkward map but it's best that I could find on interwebs ). Anyone is up for it? Any other suggestions for best location and places to chase fresh powder "neue schnee" are much appreciated |

Hope everybody managed some good snow fun this weekend. I was lucky with the weather today in Andermatt which was glorious, clear skies and sunshine. Pistes were pretty good, got a bit icy in places later but still good. Not too many people so barely any queuing.
All in all it could be the best day I've had this year. Still have the happy feeling buzz (or whatever it is) and days like this I don't want winter to end!

Hi,
Just wanted to reinforce a message on this thread that many, particularly Eire, have stressed.
Avalanche awareness is about individual decisions. While there are many resources to help you plan, it comes down to your knowledge and experience to keep you safe.
A deadly avalanche just happened in Revelstoke, Canada. For those not familiar, the area typically gets between 12-18 meters of snow per year.
Here is a quote that emphasizes personal responsibility:
Adam Burke, 20, a member of the Revelstoke Snowmobile Club, said his mother and many of his friends were up there at the time, but his mother was OK. Mr. Burke said he chose not to go, because of the dangerous conditions in the mountains this weekend.
“It was high risk and just the other day it was extreme,” he said Saturday by telephone.
“I told everyone to shut the mountain down. ... Just how I've been riding and I've noticed a lot of slab avalanches and I've caused a lot of little stuff over the season and it's just progressively gotten worse.
“I told my mom to shut it down and don't have anything to do with this event because it's going to kick you in the ass.”
I do hope the estimates are high, but please be careful, even in events that are "organized."

I understand the snow is different in Western Canada versus Switzerland. The point remains where you choose to play is your decision, and in 99% of cases, you can virtually eliminate the risk by knowing how to personally assess where you are going to play.
Play safe!
