I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations for good winter hikes in Switzerland? I am familiar with a lot of the hikes at high elevations that are most likely off limits November through February because of the cold, snowy weather.
Does anyone have any hikes that they like to do this time of year at lower elevations or where the snow/weather is milder than other places in the winter.
In a lot of touristy areas, there are some high trails where they groom the snow especially for hikers. They're called Winterwanderwegs in the German part, I can't remember the name in French, and are signposted with pink signs. You normally don't even need snowshoes to walk on them because the snow is so well compacted. Although many people do use snowshoes, we just use decent hiking shoes and have no problems.
We've done some of the Winterwanderwegs near Arosa, Goms (Oberwallis), and Villars-Gryon, which have all been great. I'm sure there are loads more.
You could also try cross-country skiing - if you're not very good then it isn't even much faster than hiking (I only manage to average about 8 kph).
