Mountain Biking in Portes du Soleil

Hi All,

A while back I was reading an article on this area, and it looks very nice indeed. In Dirt magazine (UK MB Mag) I noticed people offering biking packages in this region, with a trail guide and best practice sessions etc.

Was wondering if anyone has checked out this region for biking, and had any experience on one of these organised trips/bike weeks.

Found the following link with some info, and reasonable accomodation - http://www.mountainbike-alps.co.uk/index.html

Thanks!

Phil.

Re: Mountain Biking in Portes du Soleil

Hi

I haven't been down to the Portes du Soleil for biking for a few years but it is somewhere that I keep meaning to go back to as the trails and infrastructure are great. When I lived in the UK I did 4 or 5 week long trips to the area.

The biking is really good although perhaps not as "wildernessy" as say parts of Graubunden. Having said that the area is much better set up for easy access and linking of lifts between resorts etc.

It can get fairly busy in places, especially Morzine where alot of people just there for downhilling (i.e. sticking to just a few runs) stay but once you get outside that then it's great.

Will certainly head down there at some point this year.

Cheers
Nick

Re: Mountain Biking in Portes du Soleil

Portes du Soleil is an absolute MECCA (for European standards anyway)
It has everything you could ask for. I went twice last year and already have two trips booked this year with two more in the works. They have a great XC course but the real beauty is in the downhill and freeride parks. Bring a big bike and even bigger balls.
Tickets for this years Pass`Portes du Soleil were supposed to go on sale at midnight last night but the web page says they are experiencing technical problems. 4,000 riders, 75km, 15 lifts and 22,000 feet of descending in one day (dont forget the huge after party) This event sells out quick check out

4000 riders... That just spells a sh!t day in the mountains.

The best days are riding uncrowded trails with your mates. 4000 people is going to be a nightmare with people waiting at the entrance to singletrails, people holding you up, or people passing you out all the time.

Yes but its more of a festival atmosphere then a day of charging the mountain. Thats why I booked another trip to avoid the crowds. I am going mostly to check out the scene, the industry tents, the beer mixed with a few runs. ( I doubt I will finish the whole course) Besides most riders stick to the official route leaving all other trails wide open.

I tend to agree although I think this event is slightly different. (It may have changed since I did it when it was called the Freeraid Classic). Back then the route was a loop encompassing all the main villages in the Portes du Soleil and you could start in any one of the villages. That, combined with the length of the course meant that the field was better spread out than you might imagine.

Having said all that, when we finished, my friends and I agreed that while we'd had a great day it was like riding our favourite trails but with lots of people on them! Since the area is very well marked out you could still do the whole course on any other day when there are fewer people about.

How about a weekday when there is no-one about!

Its always full of people. But mid-week is better for sure.

Crans Montana is not too far away and offer really good trails with half the people.

Re: Mountain Biking in Portes du Soleil

Wow, that's quite a response Thanks.

However, as I know nothing about this area could someone tell me where some of the best trails are located? Hopefully some that don't require more than 160mm travel (got an Intense Tracer VP) and balls of steel!

I like the idea of running across the area lift to lift, but have no idea as to where to start and finish. I see the area covers CH and FR, apart from that any recommendation would be great.

I actually meant to look at this last year, but due to work obligations and then a medical setback towards the end of the year (triple hernia which needed fixing ) I never got the chance.

Plus my proper bike capable car (carrying that is) is ariving in 2 weeks.

Re: Mountain Biking in Portes du Soleil

there are trails and there are downhill courses. the trails tend to be mostly just following the pistes down, not much fun biking-wise. the downhill courses are where it's at. some are pretty intense, some are rather tame. most can be done safely at your own pace.

a good day: start at Champery, take the telepherique up. bike down a hundred meters and then ride/push up to the top of Les Crosets (about a 1min push). ride the DH course off the right of the chairlift. it's easy and a good warmup.

in les Crosets, take the Mossettes chair lift up. follow the piste down into Les Lindarets. it's not a particularly fun trail but it gets you down where you want to be going.

Take the chair lift going right up to Chatel. ride DH course to the restaurant next to the chairlift. as you come up to the restaurant you will see where the trail continues down to the bottom of Chatel. if you liked the previous DH course, take the first right. if you want something easy, keep pedalling up the trail and it will eventually wind it's way down to the bottom.

Take the lift back up, repeat, or take the second lift back up to the top. pedal over to the Fantasticable and you will see a trail going right, back down to Les Lindarets.

once back down in Les Lindarets, take the lift going the other direction from Chatel, towards Avoriaz. at the top, go left and the piste leads you to the start of some DH courses. there are two or three that go left, and one that goes right. the one going right is easy. take it back down to les Lindarets.

once you've had enough, head back up to Switz side via Mossettes lift, and ride the big DH course down. it's pretty challenging, maybe one or two walking section depending on your skills. once down, take the other lift up back to Champery, and bike down to Champery via ski piste, road, and a cow trail.

an alternative if you like distance is to skip the DH in chatel and lindarets and bike all the way down the road from Lindarets to Montriond and up to Morzine. ride up the lift at Morzine, ride/push up to the top and over to Les Gets. Ride the DH course down into Les Gets, across the village to the Mont Chery lift. Go up, ride Mont Chery DH course. once back in the village, take the road left out of the village, it will go downhill and loop around the mountain to the right back into Morzine. Take the Super Morzine lift across (over the swimming pool area) and up. at the end of this lift is a chair lift. take it up to Avoriaz. bike the ridge line up from there towards Lindarets, there is a trail that breaks left and takes you back down into Lindarets. from there you can work your way back to Les Crosets and Champery as mentioned above.

i bike there about 10x a summer so PM me if you want to tag along for a tour sometime.

Re: Mountain Biking in Portes du Soleil

No matter where you go the whole area has something for everyone. I LOVE this place. Even though I am more familiar with the French side Avoriaz, Morzine, Les Gets, and Chatel. This year I would like to ride more on the Swiss side. Here is a video of probably one of the greatest DH runs ever by Sam Hill. The race started in dry conditions then in the middle of the race it pissed rain and Sam had to finish in the wet mud but still beat all of those who raced in the dry. Amazing run. Mr. Hill is not human.

Re: Mountain Biking in Portes du Soleil

Wow, thanks a lot.

This really helps me a lot.

Out of interest, what sort of rigs are people running on these trails?

I've got a 160mm Intense Tracer VP which is good for most things, but the new Intense 951 looks very nice indeed

imho, tracer vp is a little on the light side but fine for tooling around the area. some DH courses will be too much for that bike. can be done but you will be unnerved by DHers whizzing by you at mach 5.

i'm on a scott gambler DH10 (203mm/230mm travel)...

Nice, I have the Gambler FR 20 ( with a few upgrades) That bike is a machine, I LOVE IT. Its capable of doing anything, so much so that I just invested in a Leatt neck brace. It just makes you want to go big.

This warm weather is great, melting off a few trails I hope..............

Hey there,

I am not a mountain bike rider (I keen on aggressive inline skating long time and snowboarding recently) but if you are interested in riding in Portes du Soleil area it might help you: http://www.lechaletdeben.com/752/index.html
