Anyone want to brave these massive hills with me? I'm out of shape now but I've run marathons before, so I'd like to get back in some sort of shape. Maybe start out with a couple miles and build up?

Hmmm....not sure up the hills, running by the lake is pretty nice though. Quite a few mini obstacle courses or parcours nearby too which can break up the monotony.
Me and several others from work have done the Lausanne half marathon the last few years, and often ran from Lausanne Vidy up to St Sulpice and back. It's a little less than 10km but that's fine for me for an after work run.
Not done any running this year however, but I need to get back into practice so I might lured back in...but not for marathon distances or breakneck speeds I am afraid.

Oh me neither... I just ran a half-marathon in St. Louis and it killed my legs and knees for a good 6 weeks. I'd like to try out running down by the lake, maybe 3-4 miles would be good. I'm up on Avenue Vinet, so I'll have to find a quick way to get down there.
By any chance are there any used bike stores in the area where I could pick one up for a reasonable price?

There is one store that has a few second-hand bikes (plus some new bikes and some mopeds) halfway between Place de la Rippone and Place du Tunnel. Those bikes tend to be pretty good, in the range of 300 CHF and much more.
The salvation army (Armee du Salut) normally has a couple of VERY basic bikes hanging up in the back, normally for about 50 - 100 CHF.
I recently saw a flyer about a place up in Cheseaux called Cycles Ricca. Here is a map, and here is a link to their website, which says that they have used bikes from 150 CHF and up.
You should also try looking at the noticeboards at the universities (Uni' Lausanne and EPFL).
Let us know if you find any other places.

| | | more marathon running
Is anyone doing the Anziere - Leukerbad marathon www.alpenmarathon.ch on 30th Aug? Or done it before?
Just trying to decide what Autumn races to do seen as I seem to be having a reasonable running year. Also thinking about Geneve and/or Lausanne.
What are the silver coast runners doing and anyone else?

The Greifenseelauf half-marathon on Sep 20 starting from Uster. http://www.greifenseelauf.ch/
As well has the half-marathon, there are also 10k, and 5.5k runs, so there's something for everyone.

| | | The need to get active in Lausanne
So after a very manic year so far travelling a lot and entertaining with work (eating too many good meals and drinking fine wines), and now having moved here, I have decided enough is enough, I miss being active and feeling the pinch in the clothes and therefore the mission is I am now moving into my permanent accommodation on Monday and so the time is right to check out whats going on in terms of exercise and activities in Lausanne.
I know there are several gyms around and do plan to join one, however if anyone is looking out for someone to train with, I am up for it. obviously having had to give up my gym a while back in the UK, I will have to ease into it again but it is always better when there is more than one of you trying.
I have seen the posts for the cycle rides etc but fear that that is rather beyond me right now.
So feel free to PM me if you fancy getting back into a spot of exercise and being sociable all at the same time. |

Hi Brit_kt,
I have just moved to Saint-Sulpice ( on Friday 29th Aug) with my partner. I'll probably need a week to get settled but would definately be up for a spot of training of any sort. I really want to join a gym as I love yoga and pilates classes but have no idea where to start looking for one. Have you found a gym you want to join? I do a bit of running outdoors too if your interested in coming for a run that would be cool. what kind of sports/classes are you interested in?
regards,
Jen

Hi Jen,
Thanks for the reply.
When I move in tomorrow my relocation lady is going to point me in the direction of a good gym nearby, so I will certainly keep you posted on that one.
I do enjoy running but very out of the habit, however happy to go along with you to get me back into it.
Regarding the gym, I enjoy all classes (more motivating than doing it all on your own in the gym), I do really want to get into pilates as I think it will do the posture no end of good due to being at a computer or stuck on a plane most of the time.
So I will keep you posted and send you a PM then we can both get settled and go for it.
Horay activities and getting fit in sight at last!!

Hi
Welcome to Lausanne.
I will be up for some classes, the thought of motivating myself to go on my own for a run or a cycle is not in slightest, appealing.
Good luck with the move.

Hi sorry for the delay in getting back to you.
This moving house business takes up way too much time.. How is your move going? are you settled into your new pad yet? Did you find out any good gyms that do classes, to be honest I have not really looked yet unless I have passed a yoga centre while Im out and about furniture shopping. But then I need to work up the courage and attempt to converse in French about the class schedule..
I have been running from Saint-Sulpice to Ouchy and yesterday Iwalked from Saint-Sulpice to Morge which is a stunning walk along the lake. It take just over an hour but is well worth it. The run to Ouchy is lovely too.
Ill have a look on the forum to see if anyone recommends classes.

Jenben, I live in St Sulpice too and do that run to morges and back several times a week. there are also great runs up the venoge creek. there is a fitness center nearby in Denges, which is a little village between st sulpice and Preverenges to the north.
Harmony
Espaces de sport et bien-ętre
Les Marais
1026 Denges www.harmony.ch
you can try it for free to see if it suits. there's yoga, pilates, bodysculpting, a pool, etc and it is not a "meat market." I don't belong, because I can't stand fitness centers, but I have several friends who really like it.
There is also a "gymnastics - stretching" class on thursday nights in the foyer paroissal in St Sulpice for women. good luck!

Hi wintermom,
thanks for that information. I know what you mean about the gym, I just like to go and do my weights or a good class if they have one then leave. I never really spend more than an hour in there but its just to keep my fitness up. It helps with the running too, I like to do my speed work on a treadmill...
Im just curious, as I have only just moved to CH whats it like running here in the winter? Do you still go out but just in heavier running clothes??
Also do you know what distance the run from Saint-sulpice to Morges is?
Also the gymnastics - stretching class you mentioned, where/what is the foyer pariossal.. have you done this class yourself and is it good?
look forward to hearing from you.
Jen

| | | 20 km Lausanne April
Hi,
After a divorce and a move to a new flat, I felt I needed a challenge to set my life back on tracks. So I decided to run the 10km race of the big 20 km Lausanne event in April.
Would someone in Lausanne be interested in training with me? I'm far from good at running (quite a beginner, to be honest ), so I would be happy to run with another beginner, motivating each other!
So if you're interested, don't hesitate to pm me!

Hi,
I have just started doing some (easy) training sessions with a friend in the mornings down at the lake. I would be happy to help with your training.
Cheers

Hi, how early in the morning? I work at University, so I'm quite close to the lake, but I can't be ready before 9:30 since I must first bring my son to daycare at the EPFL! If it's not too late, I'd happy to join you! Are you doing the "piste vita"?

Hi,
We train Tues and Thurs near Ouchy, starting at 6.45 am - so I'm afraid it will be a bit too early for you.
There must be some people on this forum who go running from EPFL at lunchtime?
Happy training.

| | | Running/Fitness in Lausanne Region
Hi Everyone,
There seems to be quite a lot of activity in Basel and Zurich (thanks to PTKate, Running Man and others), so I thought I would post to see if there is any interest in starting something here.
I was thinking to propose a general fitness/running session on a Wed evening near the lake (Ouchy or Vidy) - or early in the morning before work. Would many people be interested? I have been running some Bootcamp session's in the region, and they have been heaps of fun. The sessions can easily be tailored to the level of fitness and what people want. I generally focus on overall fitness (strength, cardio and core stability) - rather than just running.
I would also like to point out some of the smaller (shorter) events in the Region. I think most people are aware of the big events - 20km of Lausanne (25th April), Lausanne/Geneva Marathons and the Lausanne Triathlon, but there are quite a few other events.
Tomorrow (28th March) theres is a 7.5km Run at Chalet-a-Gobet, just up behind Lausanne. It would be a good training session for those thinking about the 20km of Lausanne coming up next month. The adults race starts a 1430 and it cost 20chf. There are also races for kids, which are normally free. Details can be found here (if the link works) or on www.runningcalendar.ch
Please feel free to PM me if you want more info.
Happy Training.
Kathy
