Does any one know of a good shop for buying hiking boots & other supplies in either the Zurich or Zug areas? I'm looking for a place with knowlegable staff who can help with good advice. Cheers.

Any of you serious walkers out there.

I need to buy a pair a hiking boots for this summer. Has anybody any recommendations for shoes / boots that will take a crampon for high mountain hiking, Type and place to buy.

I will try Sport trend in Hinwill just to get an idea of what sort of price range I should be looking.

What type of crampons (how high, in what season)?

If you want some that you can wear in summer you are probably looking for a 3 season boot with a firm sole so it will accept a "basic" crampon.

I have a pair of Meidl Burma Pro that have covered most of the Lake District, some of Wales and survived Airboarding several years running without damage. I've had them about 8 years and if they finally give in I'll buy them same ones. Not very sexy, high tech or exciting but they are a good 3 season boot, I think they take a C1 crampon.

They cost the equivalent of about 300chf.

Hiking boots are a very personal thing though. The best thing you can do is go to the store and try on lots and lots of boots, prepare to be there for a few hours, a good shop will expect it to take this long as well. Pay a premium on the boot if it means you get good advice, the last thing you want is to decide you made a bad choice when you are 4 hours up a hill.

I second that - been there done that, had the blisters. I bought a pair of boots based on someone's recommendation of "a name" and regretted it on every single hike I did until I shelled out for the pair I have now (had them several years and they are still fab).

Try lots on and some shops have made up surfaces of inclined rocks, pebbles and gravel so you can test the boots at all angles to make sure there are no pressure bits going to bother you on the way up or down the mountain.

I have done a fair bit of hill walking in Züri oberland, Obermurgsee etc but now its time to try to take on Garnish and Todi etc. The shoes I have now I got in England several years ago but don’t take Crampons. That’s why I have asked for a bit of recommendation before I take the plunge and make a mistake. I live and work close to Hinwil so that’s why I will first try Sport trend but would welcome any other suggestions of shops in this area.

Found this post while looking for something quite different.
I like the crampons link you put in. Interesting even if I don't use them. My daughters and their respective partners do and it is nice to understand more of what they are talking about.
