Ironman: not for pussies!

Looking at some of the earlier posts on swimming in Lake Zurich, I thought it would useful to inform the forum on the ironman triathlon to be held on June 24. It includes, 3,8 ks of swimming, 180 ks biking and 42,2 km running...so you have 3 days to shape up...

Check it out here: www.ironman.ch

hmm...I didn't know there is an Ironman in Switzerland?! Sounds pretty interesting though! Thanks for the link.

Any EF members going to be in it this year?

Re: Ironman: not for pussies!

Probably to late to enter now anyway, I heard that they are oversubscribed months in advance.

But there is also a Half Ironman on in Rapperswil in June. I am toying with the idea of doing it next year.

Re: Ironman: not for pussies!

You are right - it is fully booked and there is no waitinglist.... and no - I wont be participating. May consider it for next year but you need alot of preparations... I spent last weekend at one of the strandi's and you could see many people training...

Didn't a Swiss win the Olympic triathlon (sydney or Athens) and she was the world champ for some time?
I got the impression that ironman/triathlon is pretty big here in Switzerland.

Nick.

I actually thought a Swiss woman won the Ironman in Hawaii. Unfortunately I can't recall her name right now. I'm pretty sure I saw an interview with her a few years ago after she won the triathlon.

That's appropriate - the 'WET' bit I mean.
Actually it's Wettkämpfe - but I like your version much better. Can't win without a swim!

Kris,

The Swiss tri website someone posted is pretty good. Not listed is the tri in Locarno in early September. I am planning on doing this one. They have a medium distance - which is almost a half ironman - and a mini distance which is probably closer to a sprint.

http://www.3locarno.ch/

P.S. to the moderaters - IMO this person's post does not belong in the Ironman for Pussies post. Can we start a new "triathlon" or "looking for triathlon races" type of thread? It doesnt seem logical to me to combine these but then...what do I know

Re: Ironman: not for pussies!

Hi there;

Absolutely depressed ;-) after watching yesterday the men and women that run the Zurich Ironman. It was amazing to see the effort of these people and the support of everybody even though weather conditions didn't help. So...

I have been thinking (for too long now) of going back to Triathlon (compete some 20 years ago - cannot believe 20 years have gone) and would like to give it another go. I am looking for clubs or people in the Zurich area that accept absolute beginners - just been doing some MTB recently and realised how far from fit I am - to start training for an Olympic Distance first and then...

Any help/suggestion is more than welcome.

Thanks,

There are a few tri clubs in the Zurich area. Try these out for starters:

http://www.tcz.ch/

http://www.triclub-veloatelier.ch/en/wir.php

Check out their websites and join some of the group rides/runs/swims - they often post these publicly. My feeling is that they are very welcoming of beginners and that the members range greatly in ability.

There is also a Saturday ride out of Metro Sport in Thalwil - I bet you could hook up with some triathletes there too. It's fun - jump back in!!

race in Locarno is nice
Sprint on saturday on easy distance 400-20-5
swim in swimming pool
bike on a easy climb and easy fast descent into a valley
run on 1 lap circuit mostly flat
really fast race, easy for beginner, around 400 entries accepeted always fully booked, level of competitor is low (I finish around 15th overall some year ago... so very low !! )

the medium is a fast race, if not wrong 2.5-80-20
swim into the lake, 1 lap
bike in the same valley of the sprint but with longer course of 40km go and back, 1 lap
run on a similar lap of the sprint, 4 laps.

the waether can be hot

organization is quite good (for a swiss level of organization I mean)
the place is really lovely also for kids (there is a kid race on sat afternoon before the sprint)

ciao

Marco
