Local born kids to get free CH citizenship at 18 in Basel Stadt

Vague news that I saw at Swissinfo ( crude EN translation here ).

The Great Council of Basel on Wednesday pointed to a GLP-Motion. In DE Wer als Ausländer in der Schweiz geboren wurde und ständig im Land gelebt hat, soll in Basel-Stadt automatisch und gratis eingebürgert werden, sofern er oder sie die üblichen Kriterien erfüllt. Der Basler Grosse Rat überwies am Mittwoch dazu eine GLP-Motion. Die Regierung, welche den Vorstoss nicht hatte übernehmen wollen, muss nun dem Parlament über dessen Umsetzbarkeit und Auswirkungen Bericht erstatten. Dann kann das Kantonsparlament entscheiden, ob es die Motion als Auftrag definitiv überweist.

What the heck does it mean? Does it mean that my child born in CH would be allowed to get a Swiss Citizenship?

To get the swiss citizenship you need the OK/agreement on 3 levels:

- city/commune
- cantonal
- federal government

The cantonal agreement is given after a vote of the cantonal parliament. They propose to remove this step for this type of foreigners and make it automatically.
So in short:

- you still have to meet the basic requirements (language, no crimes/problems, etc...)
- if you have the OK of city/commune & federal government then you get automatically the cantonal OK.

In canton Fribourg about 10% of the candidates fail at the cantonal level (after OK of commune and federal gov).

Maybe they are anticipating a fall in recruits for the army in a few years time...
