82 year old retiree dies 4 days after attack by cyclists

The attack apparently happened in Dübendorf ZH as a retaliation after the pensioner told the raged cyclists that cycling was prohibited in a certain road ( Glattuferweg ).

Previous article in DE is here, an updated one from Swissinfo DE is here.
( crude EN translations are here and here respectively )

Two points are to be emphasized. One is that the 2nd cyclist tried to mediate and did NOT participate. The second is that the culprit is NOT a teenager but 48 years old.

In defence of the culprit it is obvious that he was in a fit of rage but not out to seriously wound or even kill the old man. The other way round I am often surprised that cyclists far above 30 years of age fairly often are self-assuming and aggressive, which I find difficult to understand.

Re: 82 year old retiree dies 4 days after attack by cyclists

I am practically sick to my stomach when I read articles like this. What kind of person would attack an 82 year old? Now I know a man in his mid 80s who is renovating his house and is extremely strong and fit. Not sure an attacker would have taken someone like that on.

This is why I have just learned to keep my mouth shut here and walk away rather than get into any verbal altercations with other dog walkers or cyclists.

Over-ambitious?
;-)
After all, what's worse than some "Opa" interfering with your target of shaving-off another five seconds from your personal record?

Personally, I'd say this is another form of expression of "midlife-crisis".
Some try to feel younger via a relationship to a younger woman - and some go into sports. If you exaggerate, both can be quite destructive...

Sad is that the victim did not survive. The "midlife-crisis packed" man will however have sufficient opportunity to think his action over. The case was transferred to the "Staatsanwaltschaft IV for violent crimes of the Canton" (State Attorney Office IV), which shows that police does not take the matter lightly. With a lot of luck he will slip through with a charge for "killing by carelessness" but if they conclude that he "took even heavy injuries or death of the victim" into account, he may be in for manslaughter.

Considering he hit the man (according to the papers), killing by carelesness will be off the table...

That`s gotta be a joke . . right? I thought (correct me if I am wrong) that the cyclist was on a footpath - not sure if that is the best place to go for a PB.

Right, it is "Körperverletzung mit Todesfolge" "Bodily harm with resulting death" as outlined here

http://www.strafrecht-online.org/ind...init=1&id=3415

This however is NOT CH-law but German law. Generally rather stricter than CH law but the principles of course are similar. Important is that the defence will push the point that it was NOT intentional, while the attorney will push the fact that if you injure somebody in such a way you take everything into account as a "chance".

Pretty sure irony was the intent, don't you? No one can laugh off someone being killed for no reason whatsoever.

Re: 82 year old retiree dies 4 days after attack by cyclists

Coincidentally I ran past the scene of the incident, it is really a residential/family-pensioner area of Duebendorf by the Glatt (fringes of D richtung Greifensee). There is now a memorial cross nailed on a tree with a couple red candles.

I then continued running towards the lake and came across a lot of big signs encouraging a sharing and courteous attitude between cyclists, pedestrians and families. They could use more, obviously.

A tragic event, and my take is that if berated by elderly people, indulge them.

A cyclist is not always "a cyclist". Sometimes it's just a man with a bicycle.
