Bugatti Veyron thief gets stung for $512,000 import taxes

Apart from getting locked up for stealing a Bugatti Veyron from Zurich, the thief also got stung for taxes when he took it into Germany!

Quote:
Already sitting behind bars, the car thief is now facing more than $512,000 in various tax and tariff fees. As the car was registered in Switzerland – which is not part of the EU — the car was not legally allowed to enter into Germany. As a result, transporting the car across country lines makes it subject to a 10 percent tariff and 19 percent tax, along with some other miscellaneous fees.

Really?! You can't drive your Swiss-registered car across the border? I fear a little too much journalistic discretion has been applied to the truth in this story

Yes, but he didn't drive it into Germany, he transported it (and two others), which is why he is liable for the taxes. Anything you transport has to be declared, if just to show why you don't have to pay any taxes (if, for example, you are trailering a car or bike behind your camper)

Just wondering whats the IQ level of this guy to steal a Veyron, did he really expect to get away with stealing the most recognizable numbered vehicle on the planet

he definitely deserve anything for being so dumb

That's why in Detroit we only steal SUVs and pick up trucks.

It could make for an interesting 'Somebody sold my Bugatti Veyron to a Toytown Germany member' thread here!

Chances are that he stole the car based on an "order" for a Veyron... many high end "numbered" cars drive around in Eastern Europe. Once stolen, most owners prefer to get cash from the insurance rather than getting the car back: A veyron trashed around Eastern Europe by some mafia guy for six months would lose quite some of its resale value...

Well, that, and when was the last time you saw a Bugatti around Detroit ready to be stolen in the first place?

Yes, I admit it. It was me. I ordered it. He was taking it to the "chop shop" to make it into this:

One of them pulled up next to me at the red light in Rheinfelden. It sounded like an F-16.

I couldn't turn the steering wheel as my tongue was hanging out and got tangled.

I think the key word here is "import"; when you visit Germany (or other border lands) you are not importing, you are visiting....
When you take a stolen car to Germany with the plan to sell it then you are importing!

Someone in another forum claimed to have one of these in Dubai; he claimed at full gas he could empty the fuel tank in 20 minutes!!!

Eastern Europe? Could you name some countries please? Because I live in one and it sounds that you don't know much about the place. "mafia guy"? There's no Mafia in Eastern Europe (there is in Italy) ...the organised crime is a BIG joke (there is more organised crime in CH than in Poland, Romania or Hungary... unfortunately I can't say the same thing about Bulgaria.

No. It was all over the German media. German customs charged 10% tarrifs plus 19% VAT and estimated the value at over a million EUR. So the bill was 370.000 EUR.

Directly from the hourses mouth: (the press release of the German customs)
