Various rumors in the Romandie press this morning point towards Bundesrat Micheline Calmy-Rey resigning during the course of today.

Calmy-Rey was only the fourth ever woman to serve in the Bundesrat when she was elected in December 2002 and took up her post in 2003. Currently in Foreign Affairs, and after also being only the second woman ever to serve as Confederation President (after Ruth Dreifuss) her resignation would clearly be filled with another SP nominee during the December Bundesrat vote and I'd presume that another woman would be favored.

Swiss federal councillors are traditionally reelected, as long as they chose to serve in the federal council (there have only be 4 federal councillors that have not been reelected since the founding of the confederation). They chose for themselves when it is time to go. Sometimes this happens under pressure from their colleagues or the media, but often it is just their personal decision. There have been many federal coucilors who were highly popular, but despite of this stepped down, just because they thought, that they were in federal council long enough.

Ah, I like her. She's gutsy and offered a good balance in the Bundesrat. I'll miss her.
