| Americans have been funny with Halloween lately. Some neighborhoods observe the holiday on other days of the week, e.g. the Saturday before the actual date, and they trick or treat before sundown. When I was growing up, it was always that we trick or treated on Halloween, regardless what day of the week it was, and we didn't even leave the house in costume until the sun had set. | |

Its because so many parents in the US are afraid/paranoid, maybe even over-protective... What I remember being even worse were the 'soccer moms' rolling their children door-to-door in their minivans in the US. My parents always told me that if I wanted more candy, I had to walk farther for it. You can't give a child that much sugar and that many calories without having some exercise....
I remember the pranks- as a child, I participated, but only so long as they were harmless. TP in a tree was an annoying nuisance but still just "kids being kids", hiding in the bushes outside the front door and startling the children that came up was part of the fun, and neighbors with "haunted garages" were cool.
