Faster-than-light neutrinos [Update: CERN revokes their claim]

If this has been posted elsewhere at the EF, please accept my apologies. CERN is based in Switzerland, so I believed this counts as "Swiss news."

Reclocked CERN neutrinos still break the speed limit

I don't know where in Switzerland CERN is located, but if anybody knows which canton it's in, what type of speeding ticket will the neutrinos likely to get?

Re: CERN confirms that neutrinos can travel faster than light

Hi Eddie,
The CERN is in Geneva very close to the French border.
Nevertheless the actual collider is many km long and is runs over both French and Swiss territory.
I think it counts as International News

Re: CERN confirms that neutrinos can travel faster than light

Neutrinos do not get speeding tickets because

(a) they do not travel on the roads, but straight through them,

and

(b) because they cannot be told apart in the speed camera photos.

LOL. Why Kit Kats and not M&Ms?
My second question to the man who travelled through time would be... Was the Euro replaced by chocolate coins?

Re: CERN confirms that neutrinos can travel faster than light

Crazy, been following these news articles about these neutrinos since they first thought it might be the case and all the to-ing and fro-ing between scientists saying "it is possible", "it is not possible". The implications are quite startling however and throws 'classical physics' out of the window. Weird to think that a neutrino could arrive at its destination before you actually 'see' it arrive.

well, have you seen a neutrino before that arrived in time?

hmm.. i think my brains needs some oxygen...

Re: CERN confirms that neutrinos can travel faster than light

This information is highly controversial in most scientific communities, and also goes against the Einstein theory.

Oh, look another newbie resurrecting an old thread at random.

btw - it doesn't. if neutrino have imaginary mass, and some measurements indicate this, then they'll be tachyons, fully in accordance with Einstein.

How rude of those neutrinos to arrive before they were expected.
Definitely not very Swiss. I vote to revoke their permits, and banish them to an Asylum seekers bunker.

Re: CERN confirms that neutrinos can travel faster than light

Not the first time fiberoptics accounted for measurement error. Well it is actually the second time in history AFAIK at least within last 5 years given the fact that we had had a huge problem in the field with our Rx Tx at my workplace. Spent millions on experiment to find out the culprit worth 50 bucks each. You don't have to be an Einstein, just use a scope.

Reminds me of my first oceanographic cruise. We get on station and every time we dump the the instrument overboard the damn thing leaks and fries the electronics. I'm sitting there watching my primary qualifying project for my PhD turn to crap and looking at my advisor thinking "You DID have the techs test this before we left, didn't you?"

Technical flaw found in experiment that measured faster-than-light particles

jeez. you'd think they'd have checked before declaring to the world that a fundamental 'fact' was wrong.
