A) St. Gallen : Rechsteiner is a "professional" in assembling support from various sides. It is his job as trades-unionists, where he only can work with a multi-party support. Toni Brunner in the usual SVP way tried to go it alone against all others
B) Blocher in the Canton of Zürich, in case of the Ständerat, has TWO problems, Zürich (and suburbs) plus Winterthur (and suburbs). He in the first round got support from the anti-left side. BUT in the second round, the right-of-centre people had to chose between him and Dr Gutzwiller and voted for Gutz.... . The centrists and the left-of-centre people had to give support to Mrs Diener (originally moved up on a left-of-centre ticket but in the meantime working on a centrist/left-of-centre base). In short, Blocher has not lost so much of popular support if any. He got comfortably into the National Council again

20% in Winterthur is respectable as I would have expected him winning less in Winterthur than in Zürich. He quite obviously expected far more "anti-left" votes turning over to him. And most of all, he underestimated Dr Felix Gutzwiller, the shrewd and experienced campaigner of the FDP. The FDP will run into problems once the old chap drops out, but this is not yet the case.

I might start also a "Topf-Kollekte" for a good mirror for Mr Blocher ! Because the man obviously does not realize that he is visibly aging

He for ages tried to present himself as "youthful" while Dr Gutz.... always presented himself as "elder statesman" of experience. Dr Gutz... actually is of 1948 vintage, 8 years younger than Blocher
