I will contact them...and possibly even the media. This is unacceptable. Simple because some tax evaders and banks need a peace of mind, they include Swiss cities into the top 10. I'm really wondering, whether these people who come up with stats have ever lived in Zurich, Bern or Geneva.... Also, if they include Bern and Geneva, which are clearly $hithole for places, why wouldn't they bother with Basel, which is clearly a more pleasant city than the 3 mentioned in the ranking?

Don't forget to tell them how motorways should be built in the same way as HST lines, to leverage your previously ascertained expertise.
Why did you groan the Thread Starter LiB? He's just reporting a mercer study...not giving his own opinion
Because every year, it's the same crap...somebody will always post a mercer ranking...and sheepish people will keep on reading it and support its flawed statistics.

Re: Mercer has released the 2011 Quality of Living Rankings
The survey appears to rate cities according to one single criteria.
"If you have money and stay at home, will anything at all happen that may make you stand up and look out of your window?". Then you add "1" to the number of times you stand up in one year, and that gives you your ranking.

Yeah well, pardon me..but my highway experience goes beyond Switzerland and Romania...and having 2 narrow roads with sharp curves is not a way to build em...but that's of course too far fetched for you I would assume.

..nah, the statistic is heavily in favor of the banking sector and how easy it is to launder money.

First of all mind your language and respect other members! I have never offended you so it would be normal to apologize...
Second...next time when you see the word mercer...do not read the thread...its simple
Third...I did not say I agree with it...it is something interesting and I do not think that we should share your point of view...

If you have a problem with my language report it to a mod...and second of all, if you wouldn't agree with it, then why would you post it on the forum. Also, I'm sick and tired of seeing the bogus mercer study on the EF pop up EVERY year...it's like Groundhog Day without Sonny and Cher.

Re: Mercer has released the 2011 Quality of Living Rankings
The real Groundhog-Day-Moment every year is the (deliberate) misunderstanding of the mercer study by those who disagree.
It does not (and it does not pretend) measure "quality of life" (thats why it is called quality of living survey btw.), which is an extremely subjective thing.
Its helps calculate expat salaries (where expats are people sent abroad for some time by their employer).
The idea is to adjust salaries based on some objective criteria, such as:
cost of living
quality of living
risk (included in the quality of living here)
Now, as this is still a very difficult task, proxy measures, such as life-expectancy, prevalence of diseases, murder rates etc. etc. are used.
So basically, if Joe America, who lives in New Jersey, gets sent to Zurich by his employer Multinational Inc. his salary will propably be adjusted for the higher cost of living. But his chances of getting a raise because he thinks he'll need to hire a bodyguard or fly in competent doctors are very slim.
That is what this survey is about. Not more, not less.
