| | | Re: 6 weeks holiday for Switzerland?!? | Quote: | | | | | This is not quite true, the 28 work days can (and usually does) include some or all of the bank holidays so it's actually only 20 days + statutory bank holidays in the UK which is not much different to how it is here (I know some people don't get paid on public holidays here but many do).
| | | | | Ah, yes, the 28 days includes public holidays in the UK. That makes the UK very much like the rest of Europe. So this initiative for 30 days + public holidays appears to be quite over the top. I wonder why they didn't go for 25 days? That would stand a better chance of passing. As it is, I'm afraid it might fail.

In fact, the next is in two weeks (father's day).

Here (and in Italy, and some other countries) it's March 19th.

Some insider information...
The idea being 30 days was to force parliament to a compromise (25 days) and withdraw the popular initiative, which is costly to organise especially when there is little support from well-funded parties.
Unfortunately the right-wing parties, including the "family-friendly" PDC/CVP, refused and this strategy failed, the federal parliament refused 25 days.
Hence the reason why we are now voting on 30 days.

Voters say no to longer holidays Swissinfo EN | Quote: | | | | The gfs.bern polling institute said incomplete results showed 67 per cent of voters had turned down the holiday initiative, as had all but one canton - Jura. To be passed, an initiative has to have the support of a majority of voters as well as a majority of the 26 cantons. | | | | | More DE More FR |

Six weeks is a good idea for working parents who presently have trouble minding their children on public holidays. As for the rest? I suspect they will not give a majority vote in favour of six weeks paid leave. A month and a half does seem like a lot to me...

Personally I would have been all for reducing annual holiday to two weeks. Especially considering that all my collegues at work spend 3 weeks in the military partying it up on the government every year.

Of 14 holidays, 4 are always on Monday or Thursday, and 10 on fixed dates, so on average only three will fall on the weekend.

| | | Re: 6 weeks holiday for Switzerland?!? | Quote: | | | | | Dear god how can someone vote against having more vacation? | | | | | There's a reason why the taxes are low and you pay 3.50 chf for every 35L bag of rubbish.... It's sort of like America, if it had been frozen in time and the Repubs had kept control after the war. Add a little bit of liberalism (required healthcare that you pay for) in for keeping with the EU mix and, bang, there it is. No socialist lollygagging here what with EU layabouts going on 2 month holidays and all.
The upside to more holiday time, though, is for anyone under 50 who realize where the titanic that is the ponzi pension schemes is going...at least you'd get a little more time off while you're either young enough to enjoy it or before you die (since retirement will be a thing of the past most likely).
