Re: Basel crime-wave

sorry to hear about it adrian. Hope the insurance replaces everything that is replaceable. And good that nothing of any sentimental value and passport/identity card were taken away.

My apartment was broken in to today, around 3:30pm. There are 8 flats in this block and 4 were broken in to. As were some in other blocks on this street (Basel Brausebad area).

Landlord says he knows of many break-ins recently (he's a local, and between him and his friends I think they own a few properties around here).

He says the best prevention is to make sure the main front door (to the block) is always double locked as many can be opened easily with a credit card or similar. He said this one was opened with a piece of plastic cut from a plastic PET bottle. They just push it in there and the lock opens easily if it's just the latch and not bolted. Once inside it's easy to go from flat to flat with a crowbar.
So sorry to hear this. Such has become a threat around here in the mid 70ies. It in the Zürich area has reduced a bit after the "offene Drogenszene Platzspitz" was closed but still is a bad thing..... I suppose that you tomorrow will see what really got stolen. If lucky, it will be new and large stuff, easily replaceable, and not those "value-less" but irreplaceable small personal things

It was cash, credit cards (all cancelled, none used, all UK ones), watch and a laptop. Not my main laptop luckily. Nothing of any sentimental value, or hard to replace (i.e. they left my passport and Swiss ID). I've got insurance.

Lived in central London for 15 years - nothing. Lived in some dodgy areas around London - nothing. Lived in Basel for 2 years and this. This is a dangerous hot-bed of crime! Landlord immediately blamed eastern Europeans
This is GOOD NEWS really !!

"Eastern Europeans" is a politicallly correct expression for what he really meant : YUGOS

Not yours! Don't worry. I did put that on my Facebook status, but I guess you skipped it in your excitement to discover if any dodgy Eastern europeans had broken into your flat and tidied it up :-)

Re: Basel crime-wave

Sorry to here about your violation.
Unfortunately, there does seem to be a rise in burglaries in many areas, here.
There has also been a spate, recently in my area, and it is rumoured that these are carried out by gangs from outside CH, that quick-hit an area and then move on.

Zürich for more than a decade or two had taken the bill for a problem of half the nation. And then, after that, the junkies were "repatriated" to their home cantons by Zürich policemen, and even to places in Germany (B-W co-operated very well). And yes, BS+BL were homes of many of them. That some crime instead of being solved simply was shifted elsewhere was not really nice, but inavoidable under the given circumstances

Why are Eastern Europeans being blamed. How do we know it was not some shifty young Kiwi, using Swiss breakins to finance the ritual OE, whilst cruising through EUrope in an old Commer van? I hope they stole your beanbag.

The landlord's stock answer to everything bad is "Eastern Europeans". Unless it's when he caught someone putting 2 euro cent coins in the washing machine meter instead of 50rp coins (cough). And no, they didn't steal my beanbag. Or the big fish. Your two favourite items of my furniture!

Just got back from the police station. The guy on "reception" didn't speak English but was friendly and quickly pointed to a colleaghue who did. Together we updated the police report (they'd already made it, and had all my details as the landlord met them yesterday whilst I was at work). He also was very friendly.

Next step Generali. At the moment my landlord has my policy (he said he was going to help me by ringing them up today and notifying them of the claim - personally I think he just wants to make sure they pay for the door!) but I'll check it over this weekend.

While typing this, the police just rang me and, in very good English, asked for more details about the watch. I thought they'd found something but no, he just needed to put more description on the report.

Sorry to hear. I hope it doesn't spoil the "home feeling", I hear some people find it harder to cope with the fact that they had intruders than with the actual robbery.

And good luck with dealing with the insurance company.

Re: Basel crime-wave

Luckily, I have serial numbers for both the watch and the laptop. I've got receipts for one and some kind of proof-of-purchase stamp (warrantee) for the other.

The doors here are rubbish, when I moved in I noticed that they would be easy to open - nothing like th multi-bolt system I have in London. That door can't be levered open; the only way in would be with an axe, and that's noisy.

Because police (Europol) has lots of data about organised gangs from "the Balkans" (ex-Yugoslavia and Albania). Of course, each time when they catch a group of burglars, there also are other nationalities incl CH among the culprits.

Really sorry to hear about your bad news Adrian. That just sucks.

Please invite me over to throw rotten fish at the culprits in case they get put into stocks. I might have some special mix to add to the concoction.

Hope this doesn't ruin your weekend.
